Congress – Congress Rejects Speculation Over Any Tie-Up With TMC
Congress – The Congress on Thursday firmly denied reports suggesting that it was considering a merger with the Trinamool Congress (TMC), calling such claims entirely inaccurate and without any factual basis. The clarification came amid growing speculation following a recent meeting involving senior leaders from both parties.

Congress Clarifies Position
Speaking at a press briefing, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal dismissed the reports and emphasized that no discussion related to a merger had taken place. He stated that the interaction between Congress leaders and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, along with TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, was focused solely on matters of national importance and opposition coordination.
According to Venugopal, the meeting was held within the broader framework of discussions among members of the INDIA alliance, a coalition of opposition parties formed to address key political and governance issues facing the country. He stressed that the purpose of the engagement was linked to alliance-related matters and not organizational restructuring between political parties.
Meeting Focused on National Concerns
The Congress leader explained that Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee met senior Congress figures Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi as part of ongoing consultations among alliance partners. He reiterated that the conversation revolved around issues affecting the nation and coordination among opposition parties ahead of future political challenges.
Venugopal noted that attempts to portray the meeting as a step toward a merger were misleading. He said there was no agenda item, proposal, or discussion connected to combining the two political organizations. The reports, he added, lacked any factual foundation.
Party Terms Reports Baseless
Addressing media queries after a key organizational meeting of the Congress, Venugopal strongly rejected the speculation. He described the merger reports as unfounded rumors and asserted that the party’s position had already been made clear.
He emphasized that Congress remains committed to its independent political identity while continuing to engage with alliance partners on issues of common concern. The clarification was aimed at putting an end to confusion created by circulating reports regarding relations between the two parties.
Senior Leaders Attend Strategy Meeting
The statement came after an important meeting attended by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader Rahul Gandhi, party general secretaries, state in-charges, and heads of various state units. The gathering focused on organizational matters and political strategy.
During the discussions, party leaders reviewed ongoing political developments and assessed future plans. While details of the internal deliberations were not publicly disclosed, Congress leaders indicated that strengthening the party organization and coordinating with alliance partners remained important priorities.
INDIA Alliance Remains the Context
The Congress leadership underlined that interactions among leaders of different opposition parties should not automatically be interpreted as signs of structural changes or mergers. Party officials maintained that dialogue within the INDIA alliance is a routine process aimed at addressing common political concerns and developing collective responses on national issues.
By issuing a categorical denial, Congress sought to dispel speculation surrounding its relationship with the TMC and reaffirmed that recent meetings were conducted strictly within the context of alliance coordination rather than any proposal for organizational integration.
