Conflict – Tensions in Manipur Ease After Hostages Freed Safely

Conflict – Authorities in Manipur have confirmed the release of 28 individuals from the Kuki and Naga communities who had reportedly been held captive by armed groups in the hill districts of Kangpokpi and Senapati. The development comes amid continued unrest and heightened security operations across the state following recent incidents of violence.

Hostages Released Following Security Efforts

Police officials said the rescued individuals were released from separate locations after coordinated efforts involving security agencies and local authorities. The incident had triggered concern across several communities after reports emerged that dozens of residents had been forcibly taken away by armed men earlier this week.

According to senior police officers, 12 Naga women from Konsakhul village were freed and brought safely to Makhan village. Authorities stated that the women had allegedly been detained by unidentified militants operating in the region. Security personnel later ensured their safe transfer to designated locations.

In another operation, 14 members of the Kuki community, including four men and ten women, were released in Senapati district late on Thursday night. Officials confirmed that the individuals were handed over to security forces after negotiations and local intervention efforts.

Violence Triggered Fear Across Hill Districts

The hostage situation followed a series of violent incidents reported from different parts of Manipur on Wednesday. Armed attackers allegedly opened fire in Kangpokpi district, killing three church leaders and injuring four others. The killings sent shockwaves through local communities already affected by prolonged ethnic tensions in the state.

Separately, another attack was reported from Noney district, where a civilian lost his life after being shot by unidentified gunmen. Police said the victim’s wife also sustained injuries during the incident and was shifted for medical treatment.

Security agencies have increased patrols and surveillance in vulnerable areas following the attacks. Additional forces were reportedly deployed to prevent further escalation and maintain law and order in sensitive zones.

Religious Workers Also Freed

Authorities also confirmed the release of two Salesian brothers associated with Don Bosco institutions. One of the released individuals is reportedly from Nagaland. Officials stated that the two men were freed at different locations after sustained communication efforts with local groups and community representatives.

The release of the religious workers was welcomed by local residents and civil society organisations, many of whom had appealed for immediate humanitarian intervention after news of the abductions surfaced.

Government Continues Dialogue With Community Leaders

Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam had earlier stated that the state government was actively engaged in discussions with political representatives, community leaders, and civil society organisations to secure the safe return of those held captive.

Officials indicated that dialogue channels remain open as the administration attempts to restore normalcy in conflict-affected districts. Authorities have also urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could further increase tensions.

The situation in Manipur has remained fragile over the past several months due to recurring clashes and distrust among different communities. Security officials continue to monitor developments closely while humanitarian concerns remain a priority for both the government and local organisations.
