Coalition – Vijay Calls First Alliance Meeting to Strengthen Tamil Nadu Government

Coalition – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK president C. Joseph Vijay is preparing to hold the first official meeting of parties backing his government on Wednesday evening. The gathering is expected to strengthen coordination among supporting parties, formalize the coalition framework, and outline a long-term strategy aimed at ensuring political stability throughout the government’s five-year tenure.

First Official Coalition Gathering After Election Victory

The meeting has been scheduled at the Fisherman’s Cove resort in Kovalam near Chennai and will bring together leaders of political parties that extended support to the TVK after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election. This will be the first time Vijay chairs a formal coalition meeting since taking charge as Chief Minister, marking an important step in institutionalizing cooperation among alliance partners.

TVK secured 108 Assembly seats, making it the single largest party in the House. During the election campaign, Vijay had stated that any party choosing to work alongside the TVK would be offered a role in governance. Although no political party entered into a pre-election alliance with the TVK, several parties later pledged their support after the election results were declared.

Supporting Parties Expand the Government’s Strength

The Congress was the first political party to back the newly formed government. It was later joined by the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), MDMK, and several other regional parties. Their support has helped reinforce the government’s legislative position in the Assembly.

The ruling party’s numbers have also grown in recent weeks following the resignation of several AIADMK legislators, who subsequently joined the TVK. Their entry has further strengthened the government’s majority and increased confidence within the ruling camp.

Alliance Structure and Future Coordination on Agenda

According to sources, Vijay is expected to express gratitude to alliance leaders for their continued cooperation and discuss the establishment of a formal secular coalition under the leadership of the TVK. The discussions are likely to focus on creating an organized framework for coordination between all supporting parties.

Among the proposals expected to be considered are possible names for the coalition. Suggested options reportedly include “Secular Social Justice Alliance” and “Tamil Nadu Progressive Social Justice Alliance.” Leaders from the Congress, VCK, MDMK, and IUML are expected to participate in these deliberations.

Left Parties to Stay Away From the Meeting

The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) are not expected to attend the gathering. Both parties have clarified that while they continue to provide outside support to the government, they are not formal members of the ruling alliance.

Besides senior party leaders, Members of Parliament and MLAs from the supporting parties are also expected to be present. Their participation is likely to contribute to broader discussions on coordination and policy priorities.

Focus on Elections and Major State Issues

The meeting is expected to consider appointing alliance coordinators and setting up a common steering committee to improve communication and decision-making among coalition partners. Leaders are also likely to formulate a joint strategy for the upcoming local body elections as well as future Assembly by-elections.

Several important state issues are expected to feature prominently during the discussions. These include the Cauvery River dispute, the proposed Mekedatu Dam project, and the state’s two-language policy. Alliance partners are also expected to present their governance priorities and explore ways to incorporate them into the government’s policy agenda, ensuring that coalition partners remain actively involved in shaping future administrative decisions.
