CancerCases – Jammu and Kashmir has recorded a gradual increase in cancer cases over the past five years, according to official estimates released by the Union Health Ministry.
The number of estimated cancer cases in Jammu and Kashmir has continued to rise between 2021 and 2025, reflecting a steady upward trend in the region’s disease burden. Official figures indicate that annual cases increased from 13,060 in 2021 to an estimated 14,493 in 2025. The data also shows that the average number of newly detected cases each day has grown from around 36 to nearly 40 during the same period.
Official Estimates Show Yearly Growth
Data released by the Union Health Ministry highlights a consistent increase in the estimated number of cancer patients over the five-year assessment period. The figures show 13,060 estimated cases in 2021, followed by 13,395 in 2022, 13,744 in 2023, 14,112 in 2024, and 14,493 in 2025.
Although the yearly rise has been gradual, health experts consider the continuing increase an important indicator for strengthening early diagnosis, treatment facilities, and public awareness initiatives across the Union Territory.
ICMR Registry Forms Basis of Assessment
The Health Ministry stated that the estimates were prepared under the National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP) of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The registry evaluates the cancer burden across states and Union Territories and provides projections for the 2021–2025 period based on available epidemiological data.
Officials noted that these estimates help governments and healthcare institutions understand disease patterns, improve planning, and allocate medical resources more effectively for cancer prevention and treatment.
Most Common Cancer Types in the Region
The data also identifies the leading forms of cancer affecting residents of Jammu and Kashmir. Among men, stomach cancer remains the most frequently diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer ranks as the second most common malignancy.
Among women, breast cancer continues to be the leading cancer diagnosis across the region. Stomach cancer is the second most common cancer among female patients, accounting for approximately nine percent of reported cases.
Need for Stronger Healthcare Response
The steady increase in cancer cases underscores the importance of expanding screening programmes, promoting early detection, and ensuring timely access to specialised medical care. Public health experts have consistently emphasized that awareness campaigns, regular health check-ups, and improved diagnostic services play a significant role in reducing the impact of cancer through earlier intervention.
With the latest estimates pointing to a continued rise in the overall cancer burden, healthcare authorities are expected to focus on strengthening cancer surveillance, preventive healthcare measures, and treatment infrastructure to address the growing number of patients in Jammu and Kashmir.
