CabinetUpdate – BJP Leadership Nears Final Decision on Bengal Government
CabinetUpdate – Preparations for the formation of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s first government in West Bengal entered a crucial phase on Thursday as discussions intensified over ministerial appointments and the selection of the state’s next Chief Minister. Senior party leaders are expected to finalise the structure of the new administration during a high-level meeting in Kolkata.

Amit Shah to Lead Final Round of Discussions
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to meet newly elected BJP legislators at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre on Friday. The meeting is being viewed as the final step before the official announcement of the cabinet and leadership team for the incoming government.
Party sources said the central leadership has already begun consultations with senior state leaders regarding portfolio distribution and the overall composition of the ministry. The discussions are expected to focus on balancing administrative experience, regional representation and organisational influence within the party.
The BJP’s victory in the Assembly election has paved the way for the party’s first term in power in West Bengal, making the cabinet formation process politically significant for both state and national leadership.
Suvendu Adhikari Emerges as Leading Face
Among the names being strongly considered for the Chief Minister’s post is Suvendu Adhikari, who played a major role in the party’s election campaign. His win against former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur constituency has further strengthened his position within the state unit.
Adhikari also secured victory from the Nandigram seat, adding to his political influence after the election results. BJP insiders said his organisational reach and campaign role have made him one of the strongest contenders for the top position in the new government.
At the same time, Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya is also being discussed as a possible choice for the leadership role. The party leadership is expected to make a final decision after Friday’s meeting in Kolkata.
Deputy Chief Minister Posts Under Consideration
According to party leaders familiar with the discussions, the BJP leadership may create two Deputy Chief Minister positions in the new government. One of those posts could reportedly be assigned to a woman MLA as part of the party’s effort to ensure broader representation in the cabinet.
The possible move is being seen as an attempt to maintain political balance while giving representation to different sections of the party and various regions of the state.
Senior Leaders Likely to Receive Cabinet Responsibilities
Several senior BJP leaders are being considered for ministerial positions in the new administration. Names under discussion include Dilip Ghosh, Rudranil Ghosh, Rupa Ganguly, Agnimitra Paul, Swapan Dasgupta and Nishith Pramanik.
Other possible entrants to the cabinet include Tapas Roy, Dr Indranil Khan, Dr Sharadwat Mukherjee, Shankar Ghosh, Jagannath Chatterjee and retired IPS officer Rajesh Kumar. Final decisions on ministerial portfolios are expected once the leadership consultations conclude.
Regional Balance a Key Factor
The BJP leadership is also focusing on ensuring representation from North Bengal as well as forest and tribal regions in parts of South Bengal. Party strategists believe including legislators from these areas could help strengthen administrative outreach and regional participation in governance.
Sources said the new ministry is likely to include ministers of state from these regions to maintain wider geographical balance within the administration.
The upcoming cabinet is not expected to include any Muslim ministers, as the BJP had not fielded Muslim candidates during the Assembly elections across the state’s 294 constituencies.
Swearing-In Ceremony to Be Held in Kolkata
The oath-taking ceremony for the new government is scheduled to take place at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and several Chief Ministers from BJP-governed states are expected to attend the event along with senior party officials.
The ceremony is anticipated to mark a major political development in West Bengal as the BJP prepares to formally begin its first tenure in office in the state.
