Fighter Jet Crashes During Training Mission

The aircraft involved in the incident was a Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jet of the Indian Air Force that had taken off from the Jorhat Air Force Station on Thursday evening for a routine training sortie. During the mission, the aircraft went down in a hilly area roughly 60 kilometres away from the base.

Authorities later confirmed that the crash occurred in the Chokihola region under the Bokajan sub-division of Karbi Anglong district, a remote area known for its rugged terrain.

Two Indian Air Force Pilots Lose Their Lives

Both pilots onboard the fighter jet lost their lives in the accident. The Indian Air Force identified them as Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar.

According to defence officials, the aircraft crashed in a forested hill zone, making the recovery operation challenging. Rescue teams and officials reached the location after the wreckage of the aircraft was traced early Friday morning.

Initial reports indicate that both pilots died at the crash site.

Debris Located After Overnight Search

A defence spokesperson in Guwahati confirmed that the wreckage of the Sukhoi-30 MKI was located following search efforts that continued through the night. Teams were deployed soon after the aircraft lost contact during the training mission.

Once the crash site was confirmed, recovery teams moved to the area to secure the debris and assess the situation. Authorities have not yet released details about what may have led to the crash.

Investigations are expected to determine the sequence of events that resulted in the accident.

Gaurav Gogoi Expresses Condolences

Assam Congress president and Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi expressed grief over the loss of the two pilots. In a message shared on social media platform X, he described the incident as deeply saddening and paid tribute to the officers who lost their lives in service to the nation.

He noted that Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar had made the highest sacrifice while performing their duty.

Gogoi also conveyed sympathy to the families of the deceased officers, stating that their courage, commitment, and dedication to the country would always be remembered with respect and gratitude.

Nation Pays Tribute to Fallen Officers

The deaths of the two pilots have once again highlighted the risks faced by military personnel during operational and training missions. Fighter pilots regularly undertake demanding exercises designed to maintain combat readiness and operational capability.

While such missions are routine for the armed forces, they often involve complex maneuvers and high-performance aircraft operating under challenging conditions.

As news of the crash spread, tributes poured in from various quarters acknowledging the service and sacrifice of the officers.

Investigation Expected Into Cause of Crash

The Indian Air Force is expected to initiate a formal inquiry into the accident. Such investigations typically examine multiple factors, including technical issues, operational conditions, and flight data.

Officials will analyse the available evidence from the crash site and the aircraft’s systems to understand what caused the incident.

Until the investigation is completed, authorities have not commented on possible reasons behind the crash.
