British airways hyderabad pilot illness review

British Airways has launched an investigation after three pilots assigned to operate a flight from Hyderabad to London reportedly became unwell with suspected food poisoning. Despite the unexpected medical situation, the airline said passenger safety remained fully protected throughout the flight and the aircraft landed safely as scheduled at London Heathrow Airport.

Flight Continued Safely Despite Medical Emergency

The incident involved British Airways Flight BA276, which departed from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad at approximately 7:45 am on Wednesday for its scheduled journey to London. The flight, which takes a little over ten hours, completed its route without operational disruption.

During the flight, one of the pilots reportedly suffered a significant deterioration in health while the aircraft was cruising at around 30,000 feet. According to international media reports, the pilot required oxygen after becoming incapacitated during the journey. The remaining two pilots, who also experienced symptoms of suspected food poisoning, were able to continue operating the aircraft until its safe arrival.

Pilot Hospitalised Following Landing

After the aircraft landed at Terminal 3 of London Heathrow Airport at around 2:05 pm local time, the seriously ill pilot was immediately taken to a hospital for emergency medical treatment. Reports indicated that the pilot later underwent a lengthy surgical procedure lasting nearly 12 hours.

The other two pilots were also examined by medical professionals after landing. Although they reportedly experienced similar symptoms, their condition was described as less severe, allowing them to complete the flight safely.

Airline Reviewing Possible Cause

According to available reports, all three pilots had stayed overnight at a hotel in Hyderabad that had been arranged by the airline before operating the flight. They reportedly had breakfast in the hotel’s lounge before leaving for the airport. It was also reported that the crew consumed bottled drinking water supplied by an external vendor during the meal.

Investigators are expected to examine whether the illness was linked to food, drinking water, or another factor. British Airways has not confirmed the exact cause and said the review remains ongoing.

British Airways Responds to Incident

Responding to the reports, a spokesperson for British Airways said the wellbeing of its employees remains a priority for the airline. The spokesperson confirmed that the company is reviewing the accommodation arrangements for flight crews at the Hyderabad location following isolated reports of illness.

The airline has not announced any immediate changes to its crew procedures but indicated that the findings of the review would help determine whether additional measures are required.

Passenger Safety Remained Unaffected

A British Airways official emphasised that the health emergency involving the crew did not compromise the safety of passengers at any point during the flight. Standard aviation procedures ensured that the aircraft continued its journey safely under the supervision of the remaining qualified pilots.

The incident has drawn attention to the importance of crew health monitoring and operational safety protocols in commercial aviation. While the investigation continues, the airline has reiterated that maintaining the safety of passengers and crew members remains its highest priority.
