AirportMetro – Delhi Airport Terminals May Soon Get Direct Underground Metro Link
AirportMetro – Passengers travelling between terminals at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport could soon experience a much smoother journey, as plans are moving forward for a new underground Metro connection between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. The proposed link is expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve transit convenience for domestic as well as international flyers.

Metro Expansion Planned for Airport Connectivity
According to officials associated with the project, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is developing the underground corridor as part of its upcoming Golden Line expansion. The project aims to create better integration between the airport’s domestic and international terminals while strengthening overall public transport access in the capital.
The proposed underground section will connect the Aerocity station on the Airport Express Line with the Terminal 1 Metro station through a tunnel stretch measuring approximately 2.26 kilometres. This section will form part of the larger Tughlakabad–Aerocity Golden Line corridor, which is currently under construction.
DMRC officials confirmed that the foundation stone for the corridor was laid earlier this year by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an official event held on March 8.
Faster Travel Expected Between T1 and T3
Once operational, the Metro network is expected to cut down travel time between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 to nearly six or seven minutes. At present, passengers often rely on road transport or shuttle services while moving between terminals, which can become time-consuming during peak traffic hours.
Officials explained that travellers boarding the Metro from Terminal 1 would be able to reach Aerocity station through the Golden Line and then switch to the Airport Express Line for direct access to Terminal 3. The plan is expected to simplify transit for passengers catching connecting domestic or international flights.
Project Still in Initial Development Stage
Although the proposal has generated interest among frequent flyers, physical construction work on the underground stretch has not started yet. Authorities said several preparatory processes are currently underway before the main civil work begins.
These activities include preparing engineering designs, finalising technical plans, and completing tender-related documentation. Officials involved with the project indicated that these early-stage procedures are necessary to ensure smooth execution once construction begins.
Relief for Connecting Flight Passengers
Airport authorities believe the Metro connection could become highly useful for travellers moving between terminals for connecting flights. Many passengers currently face delays caused by road congestion while transferring between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, especially during busy travel periods.
Under the proposed arrangement, passengers arriving at Terminal 1 would be able to directly access the Metro system and continue their journey toward Terminal 3 without leaving the airport transit network. The same benefit would also apply to travellers moving in the opposite direction.
Part of Delhi’s Larger Urban Transport Push
The planned airport corridor also reflects Delhi’s broader efforts to improve urban transportation infrastructure and encourage greater use of public transit systems. In recent years, the Delhi Metro network has expanded rapidly to improve connectivity across residential, commercial, and transport hubs.
Transport planners believe the airport link could eventually reduce dependence on private vehicles and help ease traffic pressure around airport roads. The integration of the Golden Line with the Airport Express network is also expected to make airport transfers more predictable and efficient for daily commuters and air passengers alike.
