Airport Development – Farmers from Jewar Take Historic First Flight From New Airport
Airport Development – A remarkable chapter in the development journey of western Uttar Pradesh unfolded on Monday as nearly 170 farmers from the Jewar area, including around 20 women, boarded the first commercial flight operating from Noida International Airport. The IndiGo service departed for Lucknow at approximately 8 a.m., marking the beginning of passenger operations at the newly established aviation hub.
Inaugural Flight Marks Special Occasion
The maiden commercial service was formally flagged off by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu. The event carried special significance as many of the passengers were landowners who had contributed their agricultural land for the construction of the airport project. Their participation symbolized the transformation of the region from a predominantly farming landscape into a major infrastructure center.
Jewar MLA Dhirendra Singh accompanied the group on the inaugural journey. According to him, the occasion represented a proud achievement for local residents and demonstrated how large-scale development projects can create opportunities for communities directly connected to them. He noted that several farmers who once cultivated the land where the airport now stands were experiencing air travel for the first time.
Visit to Lucknow Planned
Following their arrival in Lucknow, the farmers are expected to meet Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The interaction is seen as an opportunity to highlight the role played by local communities in enabling one of the state’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.
Residents from the region have closely followed the airport’s progress over the years, and the first commercial flight provided a moment of recognition for those who contributed to its realization.
Airport Opened After Regulatory Approvals
Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated Noida International Airport on March 28 this year. Prior to the launch, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation granted the necessary operational clearance on March 6, allowing the airport to begin preparations for passenger services.
The project had initially been targeted for completion by September 2024. However, the timeline was extended due to challenges related to land acquisition, construction schedules, and the completion of regulatory requirements. Despite these hurdles, authorities successfully completed the necessary infrastructure and compliance procedures before opening the facility.
Domestic Operations Begin First
Airport authorities have started operations with domestic flights and plan to introduce international services at a later stage. Officials indicated that overseas routes will be added after the airport establishes stable and efficient domestic operations.
Industry observers view the phased approach as a practical strategy that allows operational systems to be tested and refined before handling larger volumes of international traffic.
Capacity and Future Outlook
The airport currently operates with a single runway and one passenger terminal. Together, these facilities are designed to accommodate up to 1.2 crore passengers annually. Officials estimate that passenger traffic could reach between 50 and 60 lakh travelers during the airport’s first year of operation.
Noida International Airport is being developed through a public-private partnership model. The project is managed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG. The facility is expected to play a significant role in strengthening regional connectivity, supporting economic activity, and enhancing air travel options across northern India in the years ahead.
