AIADMK – Internal Meetings Intensify After Major Tamil Nadu Election Loss

AIADMK – The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is facing a period of renewed political strain after its disappointing performance in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, where the party managed to win only 47 seats and slipped to the third position in the state. The result has created uncertainty within the organisation and sparked fresh conversations about leadership, party structure and future political strategy.

Aiadmk leadership crisis after election loss

Closed-Door Discussions Trigger Political Speculation

In the days following the election outcome announced on May 4, several senior leaders of the party reportedly began holding separate rounds of discussions with legislators and district-level functionaries. These meetings have drawn significant attention in Tamil Nadu’s political circles, particularly because of visible signs of differing approaches among top leaders.

A section of AIADMK legislators was recently accommodated at a private hotel in Puducherry, while senior leader and former minister C.V. Shanmugam conducted consultations with party representatives behind closed doors. The developments have fuelled speculation regarding possible shifts within the party’s internal power structure.

Separate Meetings Highlight Emerging Divisions

Political observers noted that two separate meetings involving party legislators took place recently. One of the consultations was organised by party leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) at his residence, where discussions reportedly focused on the current political climate and the party’s future alliance plans.

Soon after that gathering, another meeting was held at the Chennai residence of C.V. Shanmugam in MRC Nagar. Reports indicated that around 37 MLAs attended the session, leading to growing discussions about the emergence of distinct camps within the AIADMK.

The consultations reportedly continued for a second straight day, with several senior figures associated with the party seen participating in discussions linked to the Shanmugam camp. Among the leaders whose names surfaced during the meetings were S.P. Velumani, Nannilam Kamaraj, Hosur Balakrishna Reddy, K.C. Veeramani, K.P. Anbazhagan, C. Vijayabaskar, M.R. Vijayabaskar and MLA Leema Rose.

Political attention intensified after some leaders were reportedly seen meeting EPS before later visiting Shanmugam’s office, adding to speculation about possible political realignments within the organisation.

EPS Camp Continues Separate Consultations

At the same time, another meeting chaired by EPS at his Greenways Road residence reportedly included several district secretaries and senior office-bearers. Leaders such as R.B. Udhayakumar, Pollachi Jayaraman, Velachery Ashok, K.P. Kandhan and Chitlapakkam Rajendran were said to be among those present.

There were also reports suggesting that a smaller number of MLAs attended the EPS-led consultation compared to the gathering linked to Shanmugam. Senior figures including Dindigul Srinivasan, K.P. Munusamy, P. Valarmathi and Rajya Sabha MP Thambidurai were also believed to have participated in the discussions held under EPS leadership.

With the AIADMK currently having 82 district secretaries and 47 MLAs, uncertainty remains over the alignment of leaders and the direction the party may take in the coming months.

Leadership Debate Gains Momentum

The internal discussions have also reignited debate over the party’s leadership after the electoral setback. When questioned about the ongoing developments, C.V. Shanmugam gave a brief response, stating only, “Wait and see,” which further increased political curiosity surrounding the situation.

Amid the growing speculation, former MLA Manimekalai publicly came out in support of EPS and argued that he remains the most capable leader to guide the party during this challenging phase.

She dismissed demands seeking his resignation from the post of general secretary and highlighted that EPS secured a strong victory margin of nearly 98,000 votes in his constituency despite the party’s broader defeat. According to her, the AIADMK leadership would carefully review the reasons behind the electoral setback and work toward rebuilding support for the party and its well-known “Two Leaves” symbol.

The recent developments have placed the AIADMK at a crucial political crossroads, with party workers and supporters closely watching how its leadership resolves internal differences ahead of future electoral battles.
