Agriculture –  Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday remembered former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna Chaudhary Charan Singh on his death anniversary, highlighting his enduring contribution to democratic institutions and the welfare of India’s farming community. Shah said that Charan Singh’s public life reflected a deep commitment to democratic principles, honesty in governance, and policies designed to strengthen the rural economy. He noted that the former Prime Minister’s vision of farmer-led growth helped shape important discussions on India’s development path and left a lasting influence on national policymaking.

Born on December 23, 1902, Chaudhary Charan Singh emerged as one of India’s most influential leaders focused on rural development and agrarian reform. He served as the country’s fifth Prime Minister from July 1979 to January 1980. Although his tenure as Prime Minister was relatively brief, his broader political career spanned several decades and left a significant mark on agricultural policy and governance.

Throughout his public life, Singh held a number of important positions in government. In 1960, he served as the Minister for Home and Agriculture in the Uttar Pradesh government led by C.B. Gupta. He later took charge as Minister for Agriculture and Forests in the administration of Sucheta Kripalani between 1962 and 1963. These roles allowed him to advance policies aimed at improving conditions for farmers and strengthening rural economies.
