AdaniSettlement – US Congressman Calls Treasury Deal Boost for India Relations

AdaniSettlement – Republican lawmaker Lance Gooden has described the recent settlement involving Adani Enterprises Limited and the United States Treasury Department as a constructive development for bilateral ties between India and the US. He also criticised the earlier handling of the matter under former President Joe Biden, claiming the investigation carried political undertones.

The settlement, valued at $275 million, was announced by the Office of Foreign Assets Control under the US Treasury Department. According to the agency, the agreement resolves potential civil liability linked to alleged violations connected with Iran-related sanctions. The matter involved 32 reported violations tied to the Indian conglomerate.

Gooden Welcomes Resolution of Case

Speaking during an interview with IANS, Gooden said the outcome was encouraging and expressed sympathy for Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani. He stated that the businessman should not have faced such legal complications in the first place.

The Texas congressman explained that he had previously contacted officials within both the Biden-era Department of Justice and the current administration regarding the issue. According to him, attempts to raise concerns with officials during Biden’s tenure did not receive a response.

Gooden said he later discussed the matter with members of former President Donald Trump’s administration, adding that officials there examined the issue closely and focused on what he described as a fair outcome.

Texas Business Leader Raised Concerns

Gooden credited Indian-American entrepreneur Arun Aggarwal for first drawing his attention to the case. Aggarwal, associated with the Texas Economic Development Corporation, reportedly argued that the Adani Group was being unfairly targeted.

According to Gooden, Aggarwal believed the legal action could negatively affect economic cooperation and investor confidence between India and the United States. The congressman echoed those concerns, saying the case had the potential to discourage Indian companies from expanding operations in the American market.

He added that he had consistently supported encouraging Indian investment in the United States, particularly from companies with large-scale infrastructure and energy interests.

Questions Raised Over Political Intentions

During the interview, Gooden also alleged that political motivations may have influenced the earlier prosecution efforts. He suggested that certain individuals connected to the Justice Department had ideological interests behind the investigation, though he did not provide direct evidence for the claim.

The congressman further argued that the timing of the charges raised questions, noting that developments became public shortly after Trump’s election victory. He claimed the situation may have created uncertainty for foreign investors considering business opportunities in the United States.

Potential Investment Opportunities in Texas

Gooden expressed optimism about future investments by the Adani Group in America, particularly in Texas. He said sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and employment could benefit from greater business engagement between the company and US states.

He also stated that the American workforce and industrial sectors could gain from increased collaboration with major international firms like the Adani Group, which has operations across multiple industries in India and abroad.

Strong Support for India-US Partnership

The congressman strongly endorsed closer ties between India and the United States, describing India as one of America’s most dependable partners in the Asia-Pacific region.

Gooden, who said he has visited India several times, praised the growing relationship between the two democracies. He noted that stronger cooperation in trade, energy, and strategic affairs could further deepen the partnership in the coming years.

He concluded by saying that India and the United States should continue building one of the strongest bilateral relationships globally, highlighting shared economic and geopolitical interests between the two nations
