US-India Relations – Ami Bera Highlights Strong Strategic Partnership Amid Policy Differences

US-India Relations – The long-standing partnership between India and the United States continues to remain stable despite recent disagreements related to trade policies, tariffs, and immigration issues, according to Indian-American Congressman Ami Bera. Speaking during the Capitol Hill Summit 2026 hosted by the US-India Friendship Council, Bera stressed that both nations still share deep strategic interests that extend beyond short-term political disputes.

Strong Strategic Ties Continue

During a panel discussion focused on defence, technology, and energy collaboration, Bera described India as one of America’s most significant geopolitical and economic partners in the modern era. He stated that the broader foundation of bilateral relations has not weakened, even as certain policy disagreements have emerged under President Donald Trump’s administration.

According to Bera, support for closer engagement with India remains strong within the US Congress. He noted that lawmakers from both parties have consistently backed deeper cooperation with New Delhi over the last three decades, regardless of changes in political leadership in Washington.

Defence Cooperation Remains a Key Pillar

Bera pointed out that defence relations between the two countries have grown steadily under multiple American administrations, including those led by Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Trump during his earlier term.

He said defence cooperation has become one of the strongest elements of the bilateral relationship, with increasing coordination on security and strategic matters. Bera added that India’s growing global influence would naturally require the country to take on a larger leadership role in international affairs.

India’s Role in Global Diplomacy

The California Democrat also suggested that India could contribute significantly to international peace efforts, particularly regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He observed that India maintains communication channels with Russia and could potentially help encourage diplomatic dialogue aimed at ending the war.

Bera further emphasized India’s importance in maintaining stability across the Indo-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions. As geopolitical competition intensifies in Asia, he said India’s strategic position and expanding capabilities would make it an increasingly important partner for the United States and its allies.

Concerns Over Trade and Immigration Policies

While expressing optimism about long-term relations, Bera acknowledged that some figures within the Trump administration have adopted positions that he believes are unfavourable toward India, especially on issues linked to trade and immigration.

He criticized certain policy approaches that have created uncertainty for Indian professionals and students living in the United States. Bera strongly defended the contributions made by the Indian-American community, calling it one of the country’s most educated and successful immigrant groups.

The congressman discussed legislative efforts designed to support documented dreamers and visa holders, arguing that skilled immigrants continue to play an essential role in America’s economy, technology sector, and academic institutions.

Focus on Technology and Future Industries

Looking ahead, Bera highlighted several emerging sectors where India and the United States could deepen cooperation. These include artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing, critical minerals, and advanced technology supply chains.

He noted that Indian-Americans hold leadership positions across many major technology companies in the United States and said both nations should work together to develop future technologies and innovation-driven solutions.

Bera also encouraged Indian-Americans to become more active in US politics and strengthen communication with elected representatives in Congress. According to him, greater civic participation would help ensure that the interests of the community are effectively represented in policymaking.

A physician by profession, Bera has represented California in the US House of Representatives since 2013. He currently serves on both the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
