Human Rights Group Calls for Immediate Action
The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, an organisation that advocates against religious discrimination, highlighted what it described as continued threats against the Radha-Gobinda Temple located in Gaibandha district. According to the council, certain groups have allegedly threatened to demolish the temple, creating anxiety among local residents and raising fears of further tensions.
During a central committee meeting held in Dhaka on Friday, council members discussed the situation and urged the government to take swift and effective measures to prevent any escalation. The organisation stressed the importance of protecting places of worship and ensuring the safety of all communities regardless of religious affiliation.
Appeal for Communal Peace and Accountability
The council also appealed to government authorities, local administrators, civil society representatives, and political leaders to work together to preserve communal harmony across the country. Members of the organisation emphasized that individuals responsible for spreading hatred, provoking tensions, or encouraging religious hostility should face legal consequences.
According to the council, maintaining peace requires strong action against those who attempt to create divisions among communities. The organisation argued that decisive enforcement of the law would help prevent future incidents and reassure minority groups about their safety and rights.
Construction Project Faces Suspension
The concerns come amid controversy surrounding a major religious project in Palashbari upazila of Gaibandha district. Local media reports indicate that authorities have ordered a suspension of construction work on a planned statue of Lord Ram that was expected to become the largest of its kind in the world.
Temple advisor Shyamal Kumar Mahant announced the development during a press conference held at the Sri Sri Radha Govinda and Kali Temple on Thursday evening. The decision quickly drew attention and sparked debate among community members and observers.
Critics Question Reasons Behind the Decision
Following the suspension, critics alleged that pressure from Islamist groups opposed to the project may have influenced the decision. These claims have fueled wider discussions about religious freedom, minority rights, and equal treatment under the law.

Exiled Bangladeshi author and human rights activist Taslima Nasreen publicly criticized the threats and hostile rhetoric surrounding the temple project. In comments shared on social media, she questioned why opposition had emerged against a single Hindu religious project while large numbers of mosques continue to exist and be constructed across Bangladesh.
Nasreen argued that genuine religious freedom should apply equally to every citizen, including minority communities. She stated that disagreement over religious beliefs should never be used to justify threats, intimidation, or destruction of places of worship.
She further emphasized that no individual or group should claim the authority to dismantle another community’s religious site simply because they oppose its existence. According to her remarks, disputes involving religion must be addressed through lawful and peaceful means rather than through violence or coercion.
