Shooting Reported Inside Wilmington Hospital

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Wilmington Hospital in Delaware. According to law enforcement officials, emergency responders were called to the facility shortly after reports of gunfire emerged around 3:30 p.m. The hospital is located roughly 30 miles southwest of Philadelphia.

Police confirmed that two individuals suffered gunshot wounds during the incident. One victim later died from injuries sustained in the shooting, while the second victim was wounded. Authorities have not released the identities of either individual, citing respect for their families and the ongoing investigation.

Suspect Taken Into Custody

Investigators worked through the evening to identify and locate the person believed to be responsible. Late Tuesday night, police announced the arrest of a 23-year-old suspect in Philadelphia.

Officials stated that criminal charges are still being finalized, and legal procedures related to the suspect’s transfer back to Delaware remain underway. Further details regarding a possible motive have not yet been disclosed.

Hospital Lockdown Implemented

Following the gunfire, ChristianaCare’s Wilmington Hospital was placed under lockdown as a precautionary measure. The restriction was later lifted after authorities secured the area and determined there was no continuing threat to patients, staff, or visitors.

Police Chief Wilfredo Campos said investigators are reviewing surveillance recordings from inside and around the hospital. Detectives are particularly focused on determining the exact route the suspect used to leave the facility after the shooting.

Witness Describes Chaotic Moments

Hospital employees and patients experienced moments of fear and uncertainty as the situation unfolded. Brian Pfeffer, who works as a patient guide in the emergency department, recalled hearing two loud sounds coming from the lower level of the building.

He described the noises as resembling firecrackers, prompting concern among those nearby before it became clear that gunshots had been fired. Hospital staff and law enforcement quickly responded as emergency protocols were activated.

Community Leaders React

Wilmington Mayor John Carney expressed sadness over the violence and emphasized that hospitals should remain safe environments for everyone seeking treatment or providing care.

Speaking during a press briefing, the mayor noted that medical facilities serve a critical role in helping people recover from illness and injury, making such incidents particularly troubling for the community.

Governor Addresses Personal Connection

Delaware Governor Matt Meyer also responded to the shooting, noting that the event carried personal significance because his wife works within the ChristianaCare health system.

The governor acknowledged the emotional impact of the incident on healthcare workers, patients, and families while expressing support for those affected by the tragedy.

Investigation Continues

Authorities continue gathering evidence and reviewing security footage as they work to establish a complete timeline of events. Investigators have not yet released additional information regarding the relationship between the suspect and victims, if any existed.

Police are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward as the investigation remains active. Officials expect further details to be released once interviews, evidence reviews, and legal proceedings progress
