At the same time, Democratic senators introduced new legislation designed to permanently eliminate the controversial program, which is valued at approximately $1.8 billion.

The Justice Department announced its position through a public statement, emphasizing that the fund had been established to assist individuals who, according to the administration, had experienced unfair treatment, targeting, or persecution by government institutions. Officials stated that eligibility was not tied to political affiliation and was intended to include people from all political backgrounds.

Court Places Temporary Restrictions on Program

The department’s response followed a decision by U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema, who issued a temporary order preventing the administration from advancing the program while legal proceedings continue. Under the court’s directive, federal agencies are barred from transferring funds, reviewing applications, or issuing payments connected to the initiative until a hearing scheduled for June 12.

Although Justice Department officials said they disagreed with the court’s conclusions, they made clear that the government would comply with the ruling during the ongoing legal challenge.

Democratic Senators Introduce New Legislation

Amid the court battle, Senators Elissa Slotkin, Adam Schiff, and Mark Kelly introduced legislation known as the Drain the Slush Fund Act. The proposal seeks to dismantle the fund and prevent taxpayer dollars from being directed toward a sitting president, close associates, convicted offenders, or individuals linked to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Supporters of the legislation argue that the program lacks sufficient safeguards and could allow public funds to be distributed inappropriately. They contend that stronger restrictions are necessary to ensure federal money is not used for personal or political benefit.

Sharp Criticism From Democratic Lawmakers

The initiative has drawn intense criticism from Democratic lawmakers, who have repeatedly questioned both the purpose and oversight of the fund.

Slotkin described the program as a misuse of taxpayer resources and argued that federal funds should not be used in ways that could benefit political allies. Schiff echoed those concerns, characterizing the initiative as a serious abuse of public trust and calling for immediate action to prevent any payments from being issued.

Kelly also criticized the proposal, saying Americans facing economic challenges should not see government resources directed toward individuals with political connections. He argued that the fund raises significant concerns regarding accountability and transparency.

Additional Limits Proposed for Justice Department Settlements

Beyond eliminating the fund itself, the proposed legislation includes measures aimed at tightening controls over the Justice Department’s Settlement Fund. Among the provisions is a restriction preventing settlement payments connected to legal claims brought by a sitting president or vice president.

Lawmakers backing the bill say the changes are necessary to avoid potential conflicts of interest and strengthen public confidence in federal spending decisions.

Calls for Independent Investigation Grow

Pressure on the administration increased further when Senator Alex Padilla and several Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee requested an immediate investigation by the Justice Department’s Inspector General.

In a letter sent Monday, the senators expressed concerns about the structure of the program, its oversight mechanisms, and the criteria governing who may receive compensation. They argued that the fund could allow significant taxpayer money to be distributed with insufficient accountability.

Origins of the Controversy

The dispute stems from a settlement announced by the Justice Department last month involving Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service. Administration officials have maintained that the compensation program was designed to assist people who were unfairly targeted by government actions.

However, critics from both Democratic ranks and some Republican circles have questioned whether the fund could ultimately benefit political supporters of the president, including individuals convicted in cases related to the Capitol riot.

With legal challenges continuing and congressional scrutiny intensifying, the future of the program is expected to remain a major issue in Washington in the coming weeks.
