Geopolitics – US Strengthens Defence Ties With India Amid China Concerns
Geopolitics – India is increasingly being viewed as a central partner in the United States’ approach to balancing China’s growing influence across the Indo-Pacific region. Senior American military officials have pointed to deepening defence cooperation and closer strategic alignment between Washington and New Delhi as key elements of this effort.

Recent remarks by Admiral Samuel Paparo, who leads the US Indo-Pacific Command, highlighted the steady expansion of military engagement with India. Addressing lawmakers, he described the bilateral relationship as progressing rapidly and becoming one of the most active defence partnerships for the United States in the region.
Expanding Defence Cooperation
According to Paparo, ties between the two countries have evolved significantly in recent years. He noted that collaboration now includes advanced military exercises, defence equipment sales, and sustained strategic dialogue under the framework of the Major Defence Partnership.
He also drew attention to growing cooperation in maritime security and surveillance capabilities. This includes India’s planned procurement of MQ-9B drones through US foreign military sales, which is expected to strengthen monitoring across critical sea routes.
India’s Role in Regional Stability
Paparo described India as an important stabilising presence in South Asia. He stated that the country continues to contribute to regional balance while expanding its strategic footprint across the Indian Ocean.
He referred to India’s involvement in infrastructure and development initiatives in countries such as Sri Lanka, along with agreements with Mauritius aimed at enhancing maritime coordination. These efforts, he said, help ensure that key regional assets remain free from external pressures.
Multilateral Engagement and Joint Exercises
India’s participation in international groupings has also gained attention. The Quad alliance, which includes the United States, Japan, and Australia, is playing a growing role in strengthening cooperation on maritime security and logistics.
Military exercises such as Malabar have become increasingly important for improving coordination among the four nations. These drills are designed to enhance operational compatibility and demonstrate collective readiness in the Indo-Pacific.
Strategic Importance of Partnerships
Paparo emphasized that alliances and partnerships form the backbone of the US strategy in the region. He described these relationships as a significant advantage in maintaining deterrence and ensuring stability.
Lawmakers echoed this perspective during the hearing. Representative Adam Smith underlined the importance of sustaining strong ties with partners like India, noting that such relationships are essential for maintaining credibility and trust in the region.
Security Challenges and Regional Dynamics
While highlighting the partnership, Paparo also acknowledged ongoing security concerns. He noted that India continues to face tensions with Pakistan, including recent military exchanges that have extended beyond traditionally contested areas.
Despite these challenges, he said India remains focused on maintaining deterrence and ensuring it is prepared to respond to broader regional threats.
China’s Expanding Influence
The growing collaboration between the US and India is unfolding against the backdrop of China’s expanding military capabilities. Paparo warned that Beijing’s increasing presence in the Indo-Pacific, along with its closer ties with Russia and North Korea, presents a complex challenge to regional stability.
This evolving situation has prompted Washington to deepen its engagement with key partners, including India, Japan, and Australia. Strengthening joint military activities and defence cooperation has become a central part of this approach.
Indo-Pacific at the Centre of Global Strategy
The Indo-Pacific region has emerged as a focal point of global strategic competition. As China continues to modernise its military and extend its reach, the United States is placing greater emphasis on building strong partnerships to maintain balance.
India’s growing role within this framework reflects its strategic importance and its expanding influence in regional affairs. The ongoing collaboration between Washington and New Delhi is expected to remain a key element in shaping the future security landscape of the Indo-Pacific.
