Geopolitics – Pakistan is facing renewed international scrutiny following claims that Iranian military aircraft were temporarily stationed at one of its major airbases during the recent standoff between Iran and the United States. The allegation surfaced in a report by CBS News, which cited unnamed American officials familiar with sensitive security discussions.
According to the report, several Iranian aircraft were reportedly transferred to Pakistan soon after US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire agreement with Tehran earlier this year. The aircraft were allegedly moved to Pakistan Air Force Base Nur Khan near Rawalpindi, a strategically important military installation located close to the country’s capital region.
Claims Surrounding Iranian Aircraft Movement
Among the aircraft reportedly relocated was an Iranian RC-130 reconnaissance plane, a surveillance platform commonly used for intelligence and monitoring operations. The report suggested that Tehran may have taken precautionary measures to safeguard key military assets as tensions with Washington escalated.
US officials quoted in the report reportedly spoke anonymously because of the highly sensitive nature of the matter. However, no direct evidence or official documentation was publicly released alongside the claims.
US Central Command declined to provide detailed comments on the issue and instead referred questions to authorities in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Pakistan Rejects Allegations
Pakistani officials strongly denied the accusations, dismissing the claims as unrealistic and lacking credibility. One senior official pointed out that Nur Khan Airbase is situated in a heavily populated area where unusual military activity would likely attract immediate public attention.
The official also argued that concealing multiple foreign aircraft at such a prominent location would be practically impossible due to the visibility of the facility and regular civilian observation around the area.
Islamabad has not issued any broader official statement beyond rejecting the report, but the allegations have triggered fresh debate over Pakistan’s regional diplomacy and strategic positioning.
Afghanistan Also Mentioned in Report
The CBS report further claimed that Iran had shifted some civilian aircraft into neighbouring Afghanistan after Iranian airspace became restricted during the conflict period. An Afghan civil aviation official reportedly stated that at least one Mahan Air aircraft landed in Kabul before the outbreak of hostilities and remained there after Iranian airspace closures.
According to the same source, Taliban authorities later transferred the aircraft from Kabul to Herat Airport, which is located closer to the Iranian border. The move allegedly came after Pakistan carried out airstrikes near Kabul amid rising tensions linked to Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan activities.
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid denied that Afghanistan had sheltered Iranian aircraft. He rejected the suggestion outright, stating that Iran had no requirement for such arrangements.
Strategic Pressure on Islamabad
The controversy arrives at a time when Pakistan is attempting to carefully balance its diplomatic relationships with several major powers. Islamabad maintains longstanding military and political ties with the United States while also strengthening defence cooperation with China.
The report referenced findings from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, which estimated that China accounted for nearly 80 percent of Pakistan’s major weapons imports between 2020 and 2024. Analysts believe this growing defence partnership has increased Pakistan’s strategic dependence on Beijing.
At the same time, Pakistan shares a sensitive border with Iran and has often attempted to position itself as a mediator during regional crises involving the Middle East.
Wider Regional Implications
The allegations have emerged ahead of an expected high-level meeting between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. Discussions surrounding Iran, Taiwan, and global trade tensions are expected to dominate the diplomatic agenda during the visit.
Meanwhile, Iran has reportedly continued pushing for broader concessions in negotiations with Washington, including sanctions relief and recognition of its authority over the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump has publicly rejected several of Tehran’s demands, describing them as unacceptable.
While none of the allegations regarding Iranian aircraft in Pakistan have been independently verified, the report has added another layer of complexity to an already tense geopolitical landscape involving South Asia, the Middle East, and major global powers.
