According to state media reports released Monday, leader Kim Jong Un pledged unwavering support to Moscow, describing the conflict as a just and necessary struggle.
Expanding Military Cooperation Between Pyongyang and Moscow
Recent developments highlight an increasingly close military relationship between the two nations. Pyongyang has reportedly supplied weapons, including missiles and ammunition, along with deploying thousands of personnel to assist Russian forces. In exchange, analysts believe Russia has provided North Korea with economic support, advanced military technology, and essential resources such as food and energy.
This evolving partnership has been underscored by a series of high-level visits. Russian Defence Minister Andrey Belousov met Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang, where both sides discussed strengthening long-term defense cooperation. Officials indicated that Moscow is considering a formal military collaboration plan extending from 2027 to 2031.
Tribute to North Korean Soldiers in Ukraine
A significant moment during the visit was the inauguration of a memorial dedicated to North Korean soldiers who lost their lives in Ukraine. The ceremony, attended by senior Russian officials, including parliamentary speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, served as a solemn recognition of the sacrifices made by these troops.
In his address, Kim praised the courage and dedication of the fallen soldiers, describing their actions as heroic and selfless. He personally took part in burial rituals, honoring those who died in combat. Role of North Korean Forces in Kursk Region
The memorial’s unveiling coincided with the anniversary of Russia regaining control over parts of the Kursk region, following a Ukrainian counteroffensive in 2024. North Korean troops were reportedly deployed in this area to support Russian operations.
During discussions with Russian officials, Kim acknowledged what he described as successful outcomes in the region, emphasizing the joint efforts that contributed to those gains. Russian President Vladimir Putin also commended North Korean forces in a message, recognizing their discipline and commitment.
However, estimates from South Korean sources suggest that around 2,000 North Korean soldiers may have died in the conflict. Reports have also indicated strict battlefield directives, with troops allegedly instructed to avoid capture under any circumstances. Only a small number of North Korean soldiers have reportedly been taken alive by Ukrainian authorities.
