According to data released by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake measured 8.2 in magnitude and occurred at a depth of around 10 kilometers beneath the seabed. The seismic event took place off the coast of Mindanao early on June 8, 2026. Earlier assessments had placed the magnitude slightly lower, but authorities later updated the reading after further analysis.
The shaking was reported in several urban centers, including Davao City, where people experienced intense tremors. Witnesses described moments of panic as offices, homes, and commercial buildings vibrated strongly, forcing residents to seek safety in open spaces.
Reports of Structural Damage Surface Online
Videos shared across social media platforms showed scenes of disruption following the earthquake. Footage circulating online appeared to capture damage to buildings and public infrastructure in different parts of southern Mindanao.
One widely shared clip, reportedly filmed near General Santos International Airport, showed visible destruction within a terminal area. Images from the scene suggested significant structural impact, although officials had not yet released a detailed assessment of the damage at the time of reporting.
Another video that gained attention online appeared to show a commercial building associated with a popular fast-food chain collapsing after the powerful tremor struck General Santos City. Emergency teams and local authorities were continuing inspections to determine the extent of the destruction.
Tsunami Warnings Issued Across Pacific Regions
Following the earthquake, tsunami warnings and advisories were issued for several coastal locations around the Pacific. Authorities in the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Yap, and parts of the western United States began monitoring sea conditions closely.
Weather and emergency agencies stated that the undersea earthquake had the potential to generate dangerous waves in some regions. However, Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology noted that no tsunami threat had been identified for the Australian mainland, surrounding islands, or its territories.

Additional videos posted online showed the immediate response of local communities. In one recording from a shopping complex, exterior walls appeared to crack and break apart, leaving debris scattered around the building’s surroundings.
Another clip reportedly captured students being evacuated from a school campus moments after the earthquake. Children could be seen gathering in an open field while teachers and staff worked to maintain order and ensure everyone remained safe during aftershocks.
Residents React as Tremors Shake Communities
Several eyewitness videos also documented people stopping their daily activities as the ground shook beneath them. In one village, residents were seen standing in roads and open areas while attempting to maintain balance during the tremors. Motorists pulled over and waited for the shaking to subside before continuing their journeys.
