Diplomacy – US-India Relations Regain Stability After Challenging Phase
Diplomacy – India and the United States are gradually rebuilding momentum in their bilateral relationship after navigating a difficult period in 2025, with both governments making efforts to strengthen cooperation and maintain long-term strategic engagement.

Former senior American diplomat Nisha Desai Biswal has said that while relations between New Delhi and Washington have recovered from recent strains, restoring the level of trust and ambition that previously defined the partnership will require patience and continued engagement from both sides.
Efforts to Restore Stability
In an interview with IANS, Biswal noted that recent diplomatic initiatives have helped improve communication and reinforce cooperation between the two countries. She said the relationship has moved toward greater stability after facing significant challenges last year.
According to her, recent high-level interactions, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to India, contributed to maintaining strong diplomatic ties. However, she emphasized that some unresolved concerns continue to influence the broader relationship.
Concerns Over Regional Engagement
One of the issues highlighted by Biswal relates to India’s concerns regarding Washington’s engagement with Pakistan. She observed that while diplomatic discussions have continued, certain questions surrounding the US-Pakistan relationship remain sensitive for New Delhi.
Despite these concerns, she stressed that both countries continue to share common interests in several strategic areas and remain committed to expanding cooperation where mutual benefits exist.
Expanding Cooperation in Critical Sectors
Biswal pointed to growing collaboration in areas such as critical minerals, advanced digital technologies, and the TRUST initiative as examples of the expanding partnership. These sectors have become increasingly important as both nations seek to strengthen economic resilience and technological capabilities.
She explained that emerging technologies and digital infrastructure are creating stronger alignment among democratic partners, including India and the United States. This convergence is expected to support broader cooperation in supply chains, innovation, pharmaceuticals, and other strategically important industries.
Technology Driving Shared Interests
The former diplomat said competition in technology and artificial intelligence is encouraging closer coordination among nations that share similar economic and security objectives. She believes India, the United States, European countries, and Japan are likely to deepen collaboration in critical technology sectors over the coming years.
Such cooperation, she added, is becoming an important pillar of international partnerships as governments seek reliable networks for innovation, manufacturing, and infrastructure development.
Trust Remains a Key Challenge
While acknowledging recent progress, Biswal said it would be inaccurate to suggest that decades of cooperation have been reversed. Instead, she believes the current challenge lies in rebuilding confidence and determining how far the partnership can advance in the present geopolitical environment.
She noted that both governments appear focused on preserving achievements already made while ensuring existing initiatives continue moving forward. At the same time, she said there is some caution about pursuing more ambitious goals until trust is strengthened further.
Trade Agreement May Be Close
On economic ties, Biswal expressed optimism regarding ongoing trade negotiations. She indicated that discussions appear to be approaching a crucial stage and suggested that an initial agreement could be reached in the near future.
Such a deal, she said, could create opportunities for addressing larger issues related to manufacturing, digital commerce, and non-tariff trade barriers in later phases of negotiation.
Long-Term Strategic Importance
Biswal previously served as Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs between 2013 and 2017, a period marked by significant growth in US-India relations. She now advises businesses on geopolitical and economic developments across the Indo-Pacific region.
Over the past two decades, India and the United States have significantly expanded cooperation in defence, trade, energy, critical technologies, and people-to-people exchanges. The partnership is widely viewed by policymakers in both countries as an important contributor to stability across the Indo-Pacific.
Both nations are also active members of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, which promotes a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific amid evolving regional strategic dynamics.
