Diplomacy – US and Iran Signal Progress Toward Critical Nuclear Agreement

Diplomacy –  The United States and Iran appeared to move closer to a possible diplomatic agreement on Sunday, raising hopes for easing tensions in West Asia after months of conflict that disrupted global shipping routes and unsettled financial markets.

Fresh Momentum in High-Level Negotiations

US President Donald Trump stated that ongoing discussions with Tehran were advancing in a “constructive manner” and reiterated Washington’s firm stance against Iran developing nuclear weapons. He also indicated that restrictions linked to the regional conflict, including the US blockade measures, would continue until a formal agreement is finalised.

The latest comments came as senior officials from the United States, Israel, and Iran continued intensive negotiations following nearly three months of heightened confrontation. The prolonged tensions had significantly affected maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping corridors.

Rubio Hints at Possible Breakthrough

Speaking during a joint media briefing in New Delhi alongside India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that negotiators were nearing a significant development.

Rubio said there was a strong possibility that the international community could soon receive “good news” regarding the talks. According to him, discussions over the previous two days had helped shape a framework aimed at restoring stability in the Strait of Hormuz and reducing regional uncertainty.

Washington has consistently maintained that stopping Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remains its top priority. Rubio repeated that position during the briefing, saying the central objective of the negotiations was to ensure Iran never acquires such capabilities.

Reports Suggest Temporary Ceasefire Plan

Several international media organisations, including Axios, CNN, and The New York Times, reported that negotiators are working on a proposed 60-day ceasefire arrangement. Under the reported framework, the Strait of Hormuz would reopen immediately, allowing commercial shipping activity to resume while creating space for broader diplomatic discussions.

The proposed plan is also believed to include negotiations on limiting or dismantling parts of Iran’s nuclear programme. Analysts believe reopening the strategic waterway would help stabilise global energy markets, which have experienced volatility during the recent conflict.

However, despite signs of progress, major differences between the two sides remain unresolved.

Iran Maintains Position on Nuclear Rights

Iranian officials continued to defend the country’s right to pursue peaceful nuclear technology. The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi released a statement asserting that Tehran would not abandon what it described as its lawful and internationally recognised right to nuclear science and technological development for civilian purposes.

Iranian state media also questioned Trump’s claim that the Strait of Hormuz would be completely reopened under the proposed agreement, indicating that negotiations may still face significant hurdles before any final settlement is achieved.

Political observers noted that disagreements over uranium enrichment and regional influence continue to be among the most sensitive issues in the ongoing talks.

Trump Praises Modi During Delhi Event

In a separate development, Trump made an unexpected virtual appearance at an event held in Delhi to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence. The programme was attended by senior officials, including Marco Rubio.

Addressing the gathering through a live video message displayed on a large screen, Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and described him as a close personal friend. He also highlighted the growing partnership between India and the United States, saying bilateral ties had “never been closer.”

During the address, Trump referred to himself as a strong admirer of the Indian Prime Minister and expressed appreciation for the relationship shared between the two countries.

The remarks added a diplomatic dimension to the day’s developments as global attention remained focused on the sensitive negotiations involving Washington and Tehran.
