Cinema – Sai Tamhankar Reflects on Typecasting and Career Choices in Films
Cinema – Actress Sai Tamhankar has opened up about the ongoing issue of typecasting in the Hindi film industry, explaining how success in a particular role can often lead to similar offers repeatedly. Currently appearing in the series “Matka King,” she shared her perspective on how actors must carefully balance opportunities with long-term creative growth.

Success Often Leads to Repetition
Tamhankar pointed out that typecasting is not always rooted in limitation but often in achievement. When a performance resonates strongly with audiences, filmmakers tend to approach the actor with roles that mirror that success. According to her, this pattern is largely driven by producers and casting teams choosing safer options that have already proven effective.
She explained that when a character gains popularity, it naturally creates a perception around the actor. As a result, industry professionals may prefer to repeat that formula rather than take risks with something entirely new.
The Challenge of Saying No
Despite understanding the reasoning behind such decisions, Tamhankar emphasized that breaking away from typecasting requires difficult choices. Turning down roles that resemble previous work is, in her view, one of the most challenging aspects of an actor’s career.
She admitted that refusing work is never easy, especially in a competitive industry where opportunities are highly valued. However, she acknowledged that she has, at times, declined projects in order to avoid being confined to a specific image. Over time, she believes she has become more confident in making such decisions, though the dilemma still exists.
Experience Brings Perspective
Having begun her journey in the early 2000s with a small role, Tamhankar has built a diverse portfolio over the years. Her work spans various genres and formats, allowing her to demonstrate versatility across different types of storytelling.
With experience, she says, comes a better understanding of how to navigate career choices. While the fear of being stereotyped has not completely disappeared, she feels more equipped to manage it now than earlier in her career.
Industry Trends Are Slowly Changing
Tamhankar also expressed optimism about the evolving nature of the entertainment industry. She noted that content-driven platforms and changing audience preferences are gradually opening doors for more varied roles. This shift, she believes, could reduce the prevalence of typecasting over time.
While the challenge remains, she suggested that the industry is moving in a direction where actors may have greater freedom to experiment without being restricted by past performances.
About Her Current Project
Her latest series, “Matka King,” features a storyline set in 1960s Mumbai. The narrative follows a cotton trader striving for legitimacy and social recognition, who introduces a new form of gambling known as ‘Matka.’ The show also includes performances by Vijay Varma and Kritika Kamra, adding depth to its period setting and dramatic arc.
Through this project and others, Tamhankar continues to explore diverse roles, reinforcing her commitment to avoiding creative stagnation while adapting to the realities of the film industry.
