StockMarket – Indian Exchanges Shut Today for Bakrid Holiday Observance
StockMarket – Indian stock markets remained closed on Thursday as trading activity across major exchanges was suspended for the Bakrid holiday. Investors and traders did not witness any activity in the equity, derivatives, or securities lending segments during the day, as both the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange observed the festival-related break.

Trading Operations Paused Across Key Segments
The temporary shutdown affected all major market operations linked to Dalal Street. Trading in cash market equities, futures and options, and securities lending and borrowing remained unavailable throughout the session. Regular trading activity is scheduled to restart on Friday, May 29, when market participants will return to business after the one-day interruption.
The closure offered investors a mid-week pause after recent market movements and came as part of the officially announced exchange holiday calendar for 2026. Financial institutions and brokerage operations connected to exchange trading also followed the holiday schedule announced earlier by market authorities.
Second Exchange Holiday in May
This was the second official trading holiday observed by Indian stock exchanges during May. Earlier in the month, markets had remained closed on May 1 due to Maharashtra Day celebrations. Exchange officials had already listed both holidays in the annual trading calendar released for the current year.
According to the schedule issued by stock market authorities, Indian exchanges are expected to observe a total of 16 non-trading holidays in 2026. Several festival-related and national observance closures are still pending in the coming months.
Upcoming Market Closures Announced
The next scheduled trading break after Bakrid will take place on June 26 on account of Muharram. Apart from that, investors will also see market closures later in the year during major occasions such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra, Diwali Balipratipada, Guru Nanak Jayanti, and Christmas.
Such holidays are announced in advance every year to help traders, financial institutions, and retail investors prepare their trading strategies and settlement plans accordingly. The holiday list applies to multiple segments operated by the exchanges, including equity and derivatives platforms.
Regular Trading Timings Remain Unchanged
Under normal conditions, Indian stock markets function from Monday to Friday. Daily trading sessions on both the NSE and BSE begin at 9:15 AM IST and continue until 3:30 PM IST. Before regular trading starts, exchanges conduct a pre-open session between 9:00 AM and 9:15 AM to support orderly price discovery and reduce opening volatility.
Markets remain closed every Saturday and Sunday, along with exchange-declared public holidays throughout the year. Currency trading, derivatives activity, and equity transactions also follow the same weekly closure pattern unless special trading sessions are announced separately by the exchanges.
Investors Monitor Future Market Activity
Despite the one-day break, analysts expect investor attention to remain focused on upcoming economic data, global market cues, and corporate developments once trading resumes. Domestic investors are also closely watching international financial trends and policy decisions that could influence sentiment in the coming sessions.
Market participants generally use such scheduled holidays to reassess portfolio strategies, monitor overseas developments, and prepare for renewed activity when exchanges reopen.
