Gulf of Aden – A merchant tanker navigating the Gulf of Aden has reported hearing a powerful explosion near its route, adding to growing concerns over shipping safety in one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors. The incident comes as security risks continue to rise following renewed threats to commercial vessels operating in waters surrounding Yemen.
Tanker Crew Reports Explosion Near Vessel
According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the incident took place around 95 nautical miles southeast of the Yemeni port city of Aden. In a statement shared on the social media platform X, the agency said the master of the tanker informed authorities that a loud explosion was heard very close to the vessel during its voyage.
The UKMTO confirmed that the ship’s crew remained unharmed and that no injuries or immediate damage had been reported. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation while gathering additional information about the incident.
Missile Launch Reports Surface From Yemen
Separately, residents living in Mukayras, an area in Yemen’s al-Bayda province controlled by the Houthi movement, told Xinhua News Agency that they had received information suggesting a missile had been launched from the region toward the Gulf of Aden.
Officials have not established whether the reported missile launch and the explosion heard by the tanker were linked. As of now, the Houthis have not issued any public statement claiming responsibility for the reported incident.
Security Concerns Intensify Across Regional Waters
The latest development follows a series of maritime security incidents in the region. Earlier this week, another commercial cargo vessel reported being struck by an unidentified projectile while sailing off the coast of Oman.
The UKMTO said that event occurred approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Al Khasab, near the eastern entrance to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The cargo ship’s crew informed maritime authorities through VHF radio that the vessel had been hit by an unknown object. Further details regarding the nature of the projectile have not yet been confirmed.
UKMTO Advises Ships To Remain Vigilant
Following these incidents, the UKMTO has urged all commercial vessels operating in the surrounding waters to maintain heightened vigilance. The agency has advised ship operators and masters to immediately report any unusual activity, suspicious movements, or security-related incidents while transiting through the area.
The Gulf of Aden, the Red Sea, and the Strait of Hormuz remain among the world’s most significant shipping routes, carrying a substantial share of global trade and energy supplies. Any disruption in these waterways has the potential to affect international maritime operations.
Regional Tensions Continue To Drive Maritime Risks
The recent reports come against the backdrop of increasing tensions involving the Houthi movement and Saudi Arabia. On July 20, the Houthis announced a ban on Saudi-linked shipping in the Red Sea, accusing Saudi authorities of maintaining restrictions on areas under Houthi control.
Since then, the group has claimed responsibility for several attacks targeting Saudi-linked commercial vessels, energy infrastructure, and airports. Meanwhile, the Saudi-led coalition has continued military operations, including airstrikes aimed at Houthi positions across Yemen.
The conflict in Yemen began escalating in late 2014 after the Houthis took control of large parts of northern Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa. In 2015, a Saudi-led coalition launched military intervention in support of the internationally recognised Yemeni government. More than a decade later, the conflict continues to influence regional security, with maritime routes increasingly becoming a focal point of international concern.
