Article370 – Omar Abdullah Reaffirms JKNC Stand on Restoring Jammu and Kashmir Rights

Article370 – Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has reiterated that his party will continue its political and constitutional efforts to seek the restoration of rights and protections that were removed following the changes introduced in August 2019.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said that the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) has not changed its position on the constitutional and administrative decisions that altered the status of the region. According to him, the party remains committed to pursuing the reversal of measures that, in its view, affected the rights of the people and the region’s distinct identity. While expressing his views through a post on X, Abdullah also quoted lines from Robert Frost’s well-known poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, using its closing verses to underline the party’s continued resolve.

Reference to the 2019 Constitutional Changes

In August 2019, the Union government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi revoked the provisions of Article 370, bringing an end to the special constitutional status previously granted to Jammu and Kashmir. Alongside this move, the former state was reorganised into two separate Union Territories—Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The decision marked one of the most significant constitutional changes concerning the region in recent decades and continues to remain at the centre of political debate.

Omar Abdullah Repeats Party’s Position

In his social media message, Abdullah stated that neither he nor his party has accepted the present situation. He said the National Conference continues to work toward restoring what it believes were rights taken away during the 2019 reorganisation. Referring to Robert Frost’s famous lines about promises yet to be fulfilled and a long journey ahead, he suggested that the party remains focused on its long-term political objectives despite the passage of time.

Farooq Abdullah Calls for Fulfilment of Commitments

A day earlier, National Conference president and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah urged the Central government to honour assurances that, according to him, had been made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir as well as to the nation. Speaking on the anniversary of the constitutional changes, he said the government should fulfil the commitments it had previously announced regarding the region. Restoration of statehood has remained one of the National Conference’s principal demands since the reorganisation of the former state.

P Chidambaram Raises Constitutional Concerns

Senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram also commented on the anniversary, describing the events of August 2019 as a constitutional issue that continues to raise important legal questions. In a post on X, he argued that the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir into Union Territories represented a significant constitutional development whose legal implications remain under discussion.

Chidambaram further noted that the Supreme Court had not delivered a final ruling on whether a full-fledged state could be converted into Union Territories, pointing out that the Court had taken note of the Centre’s assurance regarding the future restoration of statehood. He questioned when that commitment would ultimately be implemented.

Statehood Remains a Central Political Issue

The demand for restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood continues to occupy a central place in regional political discourse. The National Conference has repeatedly maintained that the Centre should fulfil the assurances it says were made both before Parliament and during proceedings in the Supreme Court. Several opposition leaders have echoed similar concerns, keeping the issue of statehood and constitutional changes at the forefront of political discussions surrounding Jammu and Kashmir.
