Delimitation – Government, Opposition Hold Key Parliament Talks Amid Session Deadlock
Delimitation –The government and opposition held an important meeting inside the Parliament complex on Wednesday to discuss the proposed Delimitation Bill, with Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi participating in the discussions. According to sources, the meeting also focused on finding a way forward to address the ongoing stalemate that has repeatedly disrupted proceedings during the Monsoon Session. The discussions lasted for nearly 50 minutes.
Delimitation Bill Among Key Discussion Points
Congress sources said Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju sought the opposition’s views on the Delimitation Bill during the meeting. The interaction took place in Rahul Gandhi’s office within the Parliament premises and was attended by senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi as well. While no formal outcome of the discussions was announced, the meeting was seen as an effort to open dialogue between the government and opposition on pending parliamentary matters.
Parliament Continues to Face Repeated Disruptions
The current Monsoon Session has witnessed frequent adjournments as opposition parties continue pressing for the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in both Houses of Parliament. Opposition leaders have maintained that the two senior ministers should address issues they describe as being of significant public concern before normal legislative business resumes.
The continued protests have affected the functioning of the Lok Sabha, which was adjourned until 2 PM on Wednesday following fresh disruptions inside the House.
Prime Minister Meets BJP Members Over Breakfast
Amid the political developments in Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted a breakfast meeting at his official residence with 37 Bharatiya Janata Party Members of Parliament. The interaction was part of his ongoing series of informal engagements with party lawmakers during the Monsoon Session.
Sources indicated that the Prime Minister shared personal experiences and held wide-ranging conversations with those present. The gathering included MPs linked to the Nationalist Citizens Party of India alliance, leaders who had earlier been associated with the Aam Aadmi Party before joining the BJP, and senior party functionaries including Tarun Chugh, Vinod Tawde and BJP president Nitin Nabin.
Opposition Repeats Demand for Statements
Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge once again urged the government to ensure that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah make statements in Parliament. The opposition has consistently argued that direct responses from the country’s top leadership are necessary on issues it has raised during the current session.
The demand has remained one of the central reasons behind the repeated interruptions in parliamentary proceedings over the past several days.
Protest March Held Inside Parliament Premises
Earlier on Wednesday, several opposition MPs, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, participated in a protest march from the Gandhi statue at Prerna Sthal to Makar Dwar inside the Parliament complex.
The demonstration highlighted multiple issues raised by opposition parties, including alleged police action against CJP protesters on July 20, allegations relating to donations made for the Ayodhya Ram Mandir, and other matters they said required the government’s response. The protest formed part of the opposition’s broader campaign to press for discussions on these issues inside Parliament while demanding accountability from the government.
