Assam Floods – Rehabilitation Efforts Accelerate as Death Toll Reaches 87
Assam Floods – The flood situation across Assam showed further signs of improvement on Tuesday, with water levels continuing to recede in several regions. Even as normalcy gradually returns, the number of fatalities linked to this year’s floods has climbed to 87. Government agencies have intensified rehabilitation measures to support affected communities and restore essential services.
Flood Impact Across the State
Data released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) indicates that the floods have affected 1,145,109 people across 25 districts between April 29 and August 3. During this period, 77 revenue circles and 2,281 villages experienced varying degrees of flooding, making it one of the state’s most significant monsoon-related disasters this year.
Casualties and Missing Persons
The cumulative death toll has reached 87. Sivasagar recorded the highest number of deaths with 47, followed by Charaideo with 21. Jorhat reported nine fatalities, while Dhemaji and Golaghat accounted for three deaths each. Karbi Anglong reported two fatalities, and one death each was recorded in Sonitpur and Kamrup districts.
Officials also confirmed that four people remain unaccounted for. Three of the missing persons are from Sivasagar, while one case has been reported from Dhemaji.
Relief Camps Continue to Support Displaced Families
Although the flood situation is easing, relief operations remain active across affected areas. According to ASDMA, 224 relief camps are currently providing temporary shelter to 73,074 displaced residents. In addition, 1,844 relief distribution centres continue supplying food, drinking water, medicines, and other essential materials to families impacted by the disaster.
As part of preventive measures, authorities have safely relocated 29,985 people from vulnerable locations to secure shelters.
Widespread Damage to Homes
The floods have left considerable damage to residential properties across Assam. Official estimates show that 3,771 houses have been completely destroyed, while another 12,987 homes have suffered partial damage. District authorities are carrying out detailed assessments to determine the extent of losses and prepare rehabilitation assistance for affected households.
Government Focus Shifts Towards Rehabilitation
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that while relief operations are continuing, the administration has increasingly shifted its attention towards rehabilitation activities in flood-affected districts. In a message shared on X, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to helping every affected family recover from the disaster.
State departments, working closely with district administrations, are overseeing relief distribution, restoration of damaged public infrastructure, and verification of losses to ensure eligible beneficiaries receive assistance without unnecessary delays.
Return to Normal Life Underway
Officials said that as floodwaters continue to withdraw from most parts of the state, efforts are being made to help displaced families return to their homes wherever conditions are considered safe. Restoration of roads, public utilities, and other essential services is also progressing in several districts.
Despite the improving situation, authorities have advised residents living near rivers and low-lying areas to remain alert. They noted that intermittent rainfall in upstream catchment regions could still affect river levels in certain locations, making continued vigilance necessary until the monsoon season fully subsides.
