Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin has found himself at the center of a political debate following a speech delivered at a public gathering in Thanjavur. The event, which focused on the long-standing Cauvery water dispute, took an unexpected turn after members of the audience repeatedly chanted the name of actor Trisha while he was addressing the crowd. Opposition parties later claimed that his response indirectly referred to the actor, an allegation that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has dismissed.
Crowd Interruption Sparks Controversy
According to reports from the meeting, Udhayanidhi Stalin briefly paused after hearing sections of the audience chant “Trisha, Trisha.” He then reportedly remarked that whether the water reached anywhere else or not, it should reach “there,” before immediately clarifying that he was speaking about the Cauvery River. The statement quickly became the subject of political debate, with critics interpreting it differently and questioning the intent behind the remark.
Opposition Leaders Condemn the Statement
The reported comment drew strong reactions from several opposition leaders. TVK MLA Rhevanth Charan criticized the statement and accused the DMK leadership of lowering the standard of public political discourse. He described the alleged remark as inappropriate and unacceptable, arguing that such language had no place in political discussions.
Charan also claimed that the party was attempting to generate attention through unnecessary controversy after its planned protest failed to gain momentum. In his criticism, he said that such conduct reflected poorly on the party’s political culture and warned that continued use of provocative remarks could further damage its public standing in Tamil Nadu.
Durai Vaiko Calls for Focus on Farmers’ Issues
MDMK Principal Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Durai Vaiko also expressed disappointment over the controversy. Speaking on the matter, he said that the gathering was meant to address the Cauvery water dispute and the difficulties faced by farmers in Tamil Nadu, rather than becoming a platform for comments that could be viewed as offensive.
Vaiko stated that any remark perceived as derogatory toward women deserved condemnation. He added that political leaders should remain focused on addressing the concerns of farmers and avoid diverting attention from important public issues through unnecessary personal references or controversial statements.
DMK Rejects Allegations
Responding to the criticism, senior DMK leader and Member of Parliament TR Baalu rejected the allegations made by opposition parties. He maintained that Udhayanidhi Stalin had not referred to any specific woman during his speech and described the accusations as baseless.
Baalu told reporters that the interpretation being circulated by political opponents was incorrect and insisted that the remarks were solely related to the Cauvery issue. According to the DMK, attempts to link the statement to actor Trisha were unfounded and did not reflect what was actually said during the public meeting.
