Media – US President Donald Trump used his appearance at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner to explain why he increasingly relies on social media platforms instead of traditional news organisations, while also arguing that mainstream media outlets have benefited significantly from covering his presidency. Throughout his address, he blended criticism of established journalism with praise for direct communication through digital channels, offering his perspective on the evolving relationship between political leaders and the press.

Trump Highlights Preference for Digital Platforms

Addressing a gathering of journalists, editors, and media executives, Trump said he no longer depends on conventional news organisations to communicate with the public. According to him, social media has become a more effective way to connect directly with audiences without relying on traditional media coverage.

Pointing to his popularity on digital platforms, Trump claimed that his online presence, including on TikTok, has generated significant public engagement. He suggested that these platforms allow him to reach millions of people instantly, making them a preferred method of public communication.

Claims About Media Ratings and Public Interest

During the speech, Trump argued that news organisations have drawn substantial viewership and readership by covering his presidency. He suggested that once he is no longer in office, media companies could struggle to attract the same level of public attention.

The President remarked that many news outlets have relied heavily on stories about him and claimed there would be fewer personalities capable of generating comparable audience interest in the future. The comments reflected his long-standing view that his political career has been a major driver of media attention.

President Shares Experience With Reporters

Trump also spoke about his interactions with journalists, recalling that he initially felt reporters had stopped contacting him after returning to the White House. To address this, he decided to personally share his mobile phone number with members of the press.

He later joked that the decision had backfired, saying he now receives phone calls almost continuously from reporters seeking comments. Trump encouraged journalists to identify themselves when calling, explaining that he is more likely to answer if he recognises who is trying to reach him.

Direct Conversations and News Coverage

According to Trump, engaging directly with reporters provides an opportunity to ensure greater accuracy in news reports. He said that declining media requests often results in stories that fail to reflect his perspective, while speaking with journalists gives him a chance to present his side of an issue.

Although he has frequently criticised media coverage of his administration, Trump acknowledged that conversations with reporters remain an important part of the news process. He indicated that maintaining communication can sometimes lead to more balanced reporting.

Remarks on Press Freedom and Transparency

Despite expressing frustration with sections of the media, Trump said he supports the principle of a free press. He described himself as a strong defender of press freedom, while also maintaining that his administration has been more transparent than previous ones.

The President compared his approach to that of former President Joe Biden, claiming he has been more accessible to reporters and more willing to answer questions during his time in office.

Mixed Message for Journalists

Trump concluded by offering praise alongside criticism for the journalists present at the event. While repeating that he believes some reporting about him has been unfair, he also acknowledged the importance of the profession and expressed respect for many members of the media.

Earlier in the evening, Trump joked about what he described as overwhelmingly negative media coverage of his presidency and playfully referenced several television personalities, including CNN journalist Caitlin Collins, whom he congratulated on receiving a journalism award.

Before introducing the President, outgoing White House Correspondents’ Association President Weijia Jiang delivered remarks emphasising the importance of the First Amendment. She said criticism of the media is a normal part of democratic debate but cautioned that weakening press freedom could undermine constitutional protections that support American democracy.
