VidhanBhawan – Uttar Pradesh Plans Lotus-Shaped Legislative Complex in Lucknow

VidhanBhawan – The Uttar Pradesh government is moving ahead with plans to establish a new, technologically advanced Vidhan Bhawan in Lucknow, replacing the existing legislative premises with a modern complex designed to meet the state’s long-term administrative and legislative needs. The proposed structure, inspired by the shape of a lotus when viewed from above, is expected to become one of the capital city’s most prominent architectural landmarks. The project is planned over nearly 200 acres in the Gomti Nagar area, with construction likely to begin early next year after the remaining approvals are completed.

Landmark Design Nears Final Approval

Officials familiar with the project said the overall design has already been reviewed by multiple government departments and is now awaiting the final administrative clearance. The proposed blueprint has also been submitted to the Lucknow Development Authority for further processing.

The design has drawn attention because of its lotus-inspired layout, a feature that resembles the official election symbol of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, the project is being presented as part of a broader effort to create a modern legislative campus equipped for future governance and administrative expansion.

Extensive Planning Process Completed

According to sources, as many as 48 leading consultancy firms participated in preparing master plans and architectural concepts for the ambitious development. After evaluating the submissions, authorities have shortlisted and virtually finalised the preferred design.

The project aims to bring legislative functions, administrative offices and support services together within a single integrated campus. Officials believe such a unified complex will improve operational efficiency while providing infrastructure capable of accommodating future growth.

Modern Facilities Planned for Legislature

The proposed Legislative Assembly building has been designed so that its roof resembles the petals of a blooming lotus when viewed from the air. At the centre of the complex, dedicated chambers will house the proceedings of both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council.

Administrative departments, office spaces and other supporting facilities will surround the central legislative section. The overall layout has been planned to provide a seamless working environment for lawmakers, government officials and staff while incorporating modern technological infrastructure.

Capacity Designed for Future Requirements

Awanish K. Awasthi, adviser to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, shared images of the proposed project on social media, describing it as a major addition to Lucknow’s urban landscape.

He said the upcoming legislative complex would include a new Assembly hall with seating for 700 members, a Legislative Council chamber capable of accommodating 200 members and a joint session hall with a seating capacity of around 1,000 people. In addition, the campus is expected to include parking arrangements for more than 5,000 vehicles along with other supporting facilities.

Awasthi also stated that work on the project is expected to commence next year.

A New Chapter in Lucknow’s Urban Identity

State officials view the proposed Vidhan Bhawan as more than just a government building. They believe the project will represent the state’s emphasis on modern governance, improved public infrastructure and long-term institutional planning.

Once completed, the new complex is expected to become the primary centre for Uttar Pradesh’s legislative activities while also contributing a distinctive architectural identity to Lucknow. With its large-scale design, advanced facilities and integrated administrative layout, the project is intended to support the state’s governance requirements for decades to come.
