Canada – Indian Student From Punjab Killed in Edmonton, Partner Charged With Murder
Canada –A 23-year-old woman of Indian origin from Punjab has died after an alleged assault in Edmonton, Canada, in a case that local investigators are treating as an intimate partner homicide. Canadian authorities have arrested the victim’s live-in partner, who also belongs to India, and charged him with second-degree murder. The allegations remain before the court and have not yet been proven.
Woman Succumbed to Injuries After Hospitalisation
The victim, identified as Damanpreet Kaur, hailed from Samrala in Punjab’s Ludhiana district. According to the Edmonton Police Service, officers were called to a residence in the Silverberry neighbourhood on the evening of July 9 after receiving information about an unresponsive woman who had sustained suspicious injuries.
Emergency medical personnel provided treatment at the scene before shifting her to a hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, she died on July 12. Police later confirmed that a man present at the location was taken into custody shortly after officers arrived.
Arrest Made After Investigation
Following further investigation, police arrested 22-year-old Ritish Kumar, originally from Delhi, on July 22. He has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the case.
Authorities stated that the incident is being investigated as an intimate partner homicide. Investigators also confirmed that no additional suspects are being sought. As legal proceedings have only begun, the charges against the accused will be examined in court.
Autopsy Confirmed Cause of Death
The Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office carried out a post-mortem examination on July 14. Investigators concluded that Damanpreet Kaur’s death was a homicide.
Police later disclosed that the cause of death was strangulation. Officials explained that this information had initially been withheld to avoid affecting the ongoing investigation.
Family Faces Personal Loss and Financial Burden
According to relatives, Damanpreet had moved to Canada nearly five years ago to pursue higher education and build her future. Family members said her parents had reportedly arranged financial support through a loan to help fund her studies and overseas expenses.
News of her death has deeply affected residents of Samrala, where relatives, friends, and neighbours have been mourning the loss of the young woman. Many have expressed grief over the tragedy that unfolded far from her home.
Fundraising Efforts Underway
As the family prepares to bring Damanpreet’s remains back to India, a fundraising campaign has been launched to help meet the expenses associated with repatriation and funeral arrangements.
Supporters have contributed through an online fundraiser aimed at easing the financial burden on the family during this difficult period. The campaign seeks to ensure that her final rites can be performed in her hometown, where loved ones are waiting to bid her a final farewell.
