Crime – The Supreme Court has overturned the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, who is accused of plotting the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. The decision came on Thursday after the court accepted an appeal filed by the Meghalaya government, which had challenged the earlier bail order. The ruling marks another significant development in one of the country’s most closely followed criminal cases.
Supreme Court Orders Surrender
A bench comprising Justices M. M. Sundresh and P. B. Varale directed Sonam Raghuvanshi to surrender before the investigating authorities within three weeks. While cancelling her bail, the court also clarified that she would have the right to seek fresh bail if the trial does not move forward or conclude within the next six months. The observation reflects the court’s effort to balance the seriousness of the allegations with the accused’s legal rights during the judicial process.
Meghalaya Government’s Challenge Accepted
The Meghalaya government had approached the Supreme Court after questioning the decision to grant bail to Sonam. After hearing the matter, the apex court found sufficient grounds to interfere with the earlier order and allowed the state’s plea. The latest direction means the accused will have to return to judicial custody unless any further legal relief is granted in accordance with the court’s observations.
Honeymoon Trip Ended in Tragedy
The case dates back to May 2025, when Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam travelled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. The couple reportedly disappeared while visiting the scenic Sohra region on May 23, raising concern among family members and prompting an extensive search operation by local authorities.
Days later, on June 2, Raja Raghuvanshi’s body was recovered from a deep gorge, turning what had initially appeared to be a missing persons case into a high-profile murder investigation. The discovery led police to intensify their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Police Allegations Against Sonam
Investigators later arrested Sonam Raghuvanshi, a resident of Indore in Madhya Pradesh, in June 2025. According to the police, the investigation revealed evidence suggesting that she had allegedly planned the killing of her husband with the help of hired attackers.
The prosecution has maintained that the alleged conspiracy was motivated by financial interests. Investigating officials claim that the murder was carefully orchestrated and executed with the involvement of contract assailants. These allegations remain part of the prosecution’s case and are yet to be tested during the trial.
Trial to Remain Under Focus
With the Supreme Court cancelling the bail, attention will now shift to the progress of the criminal trial. The court’s observation permitting a fresh bail application if proceedings fail to conclude within six months underscores the importance of a timely trial in serious criminal matters.
