Ports – Andhra Pradesh Approves Major Land Acquisition for Greenfield Port Expansion
Ports -The Andhra Pradesh government has cleared a major proposal to acquire land for the next phase of development at three greenfield ports, marking another step in its long-term strategy to strengthen maritime infrastructure and improve cargo-handling capacity. The State has granted administrative approval for an expenditure of Rs 1,638.52 crore to acquire 6,248.54 acres of land for the Phase II expansion of the Ramayapatnam, Mulapeta and Machilipatnam ports.
Government Clears Expansion Plan
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Roads and Buildings Minister BC Janardhan Reddy, who said the approvals were issued following the directions of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. According to the minister, the decision reflects the government’s focus on preparing the State’s transport and logistics network for future economic and industrial requirements.
He said the additional land would support the second phase of construction and expansion at the three ports, which are expected to play a significant role in enhancing Andhra Pradesh’s coastal infrastructure and maritime trade capabilities.
Ramayapatnam Port Receives Largest Share
Among the three projects, the Ramayapatnam Greenfield Port will receive the largest allocation for land acquisition. The government has approved the purchase of 2,924.45 acres for the project, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 851 crore.
Officials believe the expansion will create additional space for future port facilities and supporting infrastructure as cargo movement through the region increases in the coming years.
Land Approved for Mulapeta Project
For the Mulapeta Greenfield Port, administrative sanction has been provided for acquiring 1,903.39 acres of land. The State government has earmarked Rs 440.52 crore for the acquisition process.
The expansion is expected to support the development of essential infrastructure required for port operations and related industrial activities. The project forms part of the government’s broader vision of developing modern maritime assets along Andhra Pradesh’s coastline.
Machilipatnam Port Expansion Also Cleared
The government has also approved land acquisition for the Machilipatnam Greenfield Port. Under the sanctioned proposal, 1,420.70 acres will be acquired at an estimated cost of nearly Rs 347 crore.
The additional land is intended to facilitate the next phase of development and improve the port’s ability to accommodate future infrastructure projects. Officials said the approval is aligned with the State’s long-term planning for expanding port capacity and supporting economic growth.
Focus on Future Infrastructure
According to the minister, the approvals are part of a larger infrastructure roadmap designed to strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s position as a key maritime hub on India’s eastern coast. The State government has consistently highlighted the importance of expanding its port network to improve connectivity, attract investment and support industrial development.
The Phase II expansion of the three greenfield ports is expected to provide the land required for future facilities while ensuring that infrastructure development keeps pace with growing logistics and trade demands. With the latest administrative sanctions in place, the government is set to move forward with the land acquisition process for all three projects.
