The France forward became the youngest player to make 20 appearances in the tournament and also reached 20 World Cup goals faster than any player before him.
Decisive Contribution Against Morocco
The 27-year-old had an eventful night in the quarter-final. Mbappe missed a penalty during the first half but responded after the interval, scoring France’s opening goal in the 60th minute. He later created the second for Ousmane Dembele, helping Didier Deschamps’ side secure a controlled victory over Morocco.
The result maintained France’s strong run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and placed Mbappe at the centre of another important result for the national team. His goal was his eighth of the current tournament, taking his total World Cup return to 20 goals from 20 appearances.
A Rapid Rise in World Cup Scoring
Mbappe’s 20 goals have come across three World Cup editions: 2018, 2022 and 2026. The figure leaves him one goal short of Lionel Messi’s total of 21, which stands among the highest scoring records in World Cup history.
The French forward’s record has been built on consistent performances in both group-stage and knockout matches. His latest goal against Morocco also strengthened his position in the list of the competition’s most productive players, with France still having the opportunity to play more matches in the tournament.
France Appearance Record Reached
Mbappe has now played 20 World Cup matches for France, making him the country’s most capped player in the competition. He moved level with former captain Hugo Lloris and went ahead of several key figures from recent French squads, including Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud and Raphael Varane.
Lionel Messi remains the overall leader for World Cup appearances, having played 30 matches in the competition. However, Mbappe’s total underlines his importance to France over three separate tournaments and reflects the length of his influence on the international stage.
Victory Numbers Also Continue to Climb
The Morocco match also carried significance in terms of World Cup wins. Mbappe reached 17 victories in the tournament, drawing level with Germany’s Miroslav Klose. Only Messi, with 20 World Cup wins, remains ahead of him in the all-time standings.
Earlier in the 2026 campaign, Mbappe became the French player with the most World Cup victories after France beat Sweden 3-0. That result gave him 15 wins. His next success, against Paraguay, brought him level with Brazil great Cafu on 16 victories before the Morocco win moved him alongside Klose.
Knockout Record Extended Further
Mbappe has also widened his lead in the World Cup knockout-stage scoring rankings. He began the 2026 tournament with eight goals in elimination matches, level with Brazil legends Leonidas and Ronaldo.
A two-goal performance against Sweden in New Jersey lifted him clear of that group. He then scored again against Paraguay and added another against Morocco, taking his knockout-stage tally to 12 goals.
