Tamil Nadu Politics – Senthil Balaji Summoned in Alleged Defection Case
Tamil Nadu Politics – Former Tamil Nadu minister V. Senthil Balaji has been asked to appear before Chennai Police on Monday as investigators examine allegations of a plot to destabilise the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government headed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. Police have also summoned Balaji’s brother, Ashok Kumar, for questioning in the case.

Complaint Triggered Police Investigation
The inquiry began after Dr Ilayaraja, the TVK MLA from the Uthangarai constituency in Krishnagiri district, submitted a complaint to Chennai Police Commissioner Amalraj. The legislator alleged that he was offered Rs 35 crore to change his political loyalty.
According to the complaint, the alleged offer was part of a wider effort to persuade TVK MLAs to leave the party and weaken the state government. Police registered the matter and formed a special team to investigate the claims.
Several People Taken Into Custody
Investigators have arrested a number of people in connection with the alleged conspiracy. Among them are Thirunavukkarasu, founder of election polling firm IPDS, along with Thyagarajan and Naresh, who are said to be associated with Senthil Balaji.
Police have also arrested DMK workers Ramesh, Karthi and Selvan from Karur, AIADMK functionary Srinivasan from Manapakkam, and Rajesh from Asthinapuram. The precise role of each accused is being examined as the investigation continues.
Police Examine Claims of Larger Funding Plan
Sources familiar with the investigation said some of those questioned allegedly spoke about a proposed fund of nearly Rs 180 crore for influencing TVK legislators. Investigators are checking whether there is evidence to support those statements.
The police are also looking into allegations that the suspected operation may have been organised under the direction of Senthil Balaji and Ashok Kumar. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the evidence collected so far, and the allegations remain under investigation.
Summons Issued for Monday Appearance
Triplicane Police have directed Senthil Balaji and Ashok Kumar to appear before the investigating officers at 10.30 a.m. on Monday. The summonses were issued to obtain their responses to the allegations and gather further details connected to the case.
Police officials said both men are expected to cooperate with the inquiry. If either person does not appear without a valid explanation, investigators may consider further action under applicable legal provisions.
Travel Watch Reportedly Put in Place
Police have reportedly issued a Look Out Circular to airports across India as part of precautionary measures linked to the case. The step is intended to ensure that the two individuals remain available for questioning while the inquiry is underway.
Security agencies have also been alerted, with airport surveillance reportedly increased. Officials have not released further details about the travel-related measures.
Probe Expected to Continue
The alleged cash-for-defection case remains at an early stage, and police are expected to question additional people in the coming days. Investigators are examining financial links, communications and other material that may help establish whether there was an organised attempt to influence elected representatives.
Authorities are likely to provide further updates as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available.
