RG Kar Case – Victim’s Mother Says All Those Involved Will Face Justice

RG Kar Case – Ratna Debnath, the mother of the postgraduate trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has said she believes every person involved in the crime and the alleged destruction or concealment of evidence will eventually be held accountable. Debnath, who is also a BJP MLA, made the remarks while speaking to ANI in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Mother alleges wider involvement in the case

Debnath said she was aware of the people she believes were connected to the killing and the alleged cover-up. Calling those responsible for her daughter’s death “not humans”, she said they could not avoid punishment indefinitely.

“The people who killed my daughter are not humans. I know their names. Those who carried out the crime and those who hid evidence are criminals. They will be arrested and punished,” she said.

Her statement came as the family continues to seek answers nearly two years after the death of the 31-year-old trainee doctor. The case has remained under close public and judicial scrutiny, with the victim’s relatives repeatedly raising questions about the progress of the investigation.

Father cites recent court developments

The victim’s father, Shekhar Ranjan Debnath, had expressed similar confidence on June 27. He said recent action in the Tamanna Khatun case had strengthened the family’s belief that those responsible in the RG Kar case would also be identified and prosecuted.

According to him, the intervention of the Calcutta High Court and its monitoring of the investigation gave the family fresh hope. He said the court’s involvement was important because the family had long been dissatisfied with the handling of the case by the earlier investigation team.

Concerns raised over the previous investigation

Shekhar Ranjan Debnath alleged that the earlier Special Investigation Team did not take charge of the inquiry promptly. He also claimed that several concerns raised by the family were not properly recorded during the course of the probe.

The family has maintained that the investigation required closer supervision and a more thorough examination of all available evidence. Their concerns were later reflected in court proceedings, where the High Court expressed dissatisfaction with the progress made by the previous SIT.

The court subsequently ordered the formation of a new Special Investigation Team and gave it one month to show progress in the case. The direction was seen as a significant development in an investigation that has drawn widespread attention across the country.

Case triggered nationwide protests

The RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case began on August 9, 2024, when the body of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was found in a seminar room on the hospital premises in Kolkata.

The incident led to protests by doctors, medical students, hospital staff and civil society organisations in several parts of India. Demonstrators called for a transparent investigation, accountability for any lapses and stronger workplace safety protections for healthcare professionals.

The case also renewed debate around security arrangements at hospitals, particularly for women doctors and medical workers who often work long and irregular shifts.

High Court orders fresh SIT

On May 21, the Calcutta High Court directed that a fresh SIT be formed after reviewing the earlier investigation. The court had raised concerns over the manner in which the probe had progressed and sought a more effective inquiry.

A Sealdah court had also earlier noted that the investigation had not advanced sufficiently. With the new SIT now tasked with moving the case forward, the victim’s family has said it remains hopeful that the full truth will emerge and those found responsible will face legal action.
