ElectoralDispute – Administration Restores Calm After Religious Tension in Bastar Village

ElectoralDispute – Authorities successfully restored peace in a tribal village after prolonged negotiations between two groups over a religious dispute.

Bastar religious tension peace restored

A tense situation in Bharanda village of Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district eased after district officials and senior police officers carried out nearly 12 hours of continuous discussions with both sides. The intervention helped prevent further violence and allowed families who had temporarily left their homes to return safely. Security personnel remained deployed throughout the operation to maintain law and order in the sensitive tribal region.

Disagreement Sparked by Religious Differences

The dispute emerged following a confrontation between traditional tribal residents and a group of tribal families who had embraced Christianity. According to the affected families, around 26 households were allegedly compelled to leave their homes after being told to either give up their adopted faith or leave the village permanently.

Traditional tribal residents rejected those allegations, maintaining that the disagreement arose because the converted families had repeatedly shown disrespect toward indigenous customs, rituals and local deities. They argued that preserving long-standing tribal traditions was essential for maintaining social harmony within the community.

Administration Steps In to Prevent Escalation

As the situation became increasingly tense, police forces were deployed to the village to ensure that the conflict did not escalate into large-scale violence. Given the sensitivity of the Bastar region, senior district officials immediately reached the village to oversee efforts aimed at resolving the dispute.

The Additional Superintendent of Police, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and the local Tehsildar jointly conducted 14 rounds of meetings with representatives from both groups over the course of nearly 12 hours. Their sustained engagement eventually resulted in an understanding that enabled the displaced families to return to their homes under administrative supervision.

Community Conditions After the Settlement

Although peace has been restored for now, the settlement includes several conditions put forward by members of the traditional tribal community. They have reportedly given the converted families one month to return to their original tribal faith.

The agreement also states that individuals belonging to the converted group will not be permitted to conduct burial ceremonies within the geographical limits of the village. In addition, entry of outsiders associated with the concerned religious community has reportedly been restricted under the understanding reached during the negotiations.

Authorities Continue Close Monitoring

District officials have described the current arrangement as a temporary resolution intended to restore normalcy and prevent further unrest. The administration has confirmed that the situation remains under continuous observation, with police maintaining vigilance to ensure that peace is preserved and no fresh law-and-order issues arise.

Officials are expected to remain in regular contact with community representatives in the coming weeks to monitor compliance with the agreed conditions and respond promptly if tensions resurface. The administration has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace while ensuring that any future disputes are addressed through dialogue and within the framework of the law.
