Monsoon – Maharashtra Sees Widespread Rainfall as Heavy Showers Revive Kharif Outlook

Monsoon – After a slow beginning to the monsoon season, rainfall has intensified across Maharashtra, bringing relief to farmers, improving water availability, and affecting transport services in several regions.

Maharashtra monsoon rainfall update

The southwest monsoon has regained strength across Maharashtra after a delayed start earlier this month. During the past two days, moderate to heavy rainfall has been reported from several districts, including parts of West Vidarbha. The fresh spell has significantly improved the state’s rainfall statistics while also causing disruptions to daily life in urban areas due to waterlogging and traffic congestion.

Heavy Rain Impacts Daily Life in Mumbai

Mumbai witnessed its first major spell of monsoon rain on Wednesday morning, leading to widespread inconvenience for commuters. Water accumulated in several low-lying locations, slowing road traffic and affecting suburban rail operations during the busy morning hours. According to officials, some parts of the city received more than 300 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms over the next 24 hours.

Statewide Rainfall Shows Strong Improvement

The recent showers have considerably improved Maharashtra’s cumulative rainfall figures. The state’s average rainfall increased from 29.5 mm on June 20 to 42.9 mm by the morning of June 24, registering a rise of 13.4 mm within four days. As a result, Maharashtra has now received nearly 25.8 percent of its normal seasonal rainfall, providing timely support for the upcoming Kharif sowing period.

Marathwada Records the Highest Seasonal Progress

Among all regions in the state, the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division in Marathwada has recorded the strongest rainfall performance. The division’s average rainfall climbed from 41.3 mm to 47.8 mm over the same period. This improvement has enabled the region to achieve 44.6 percent of its expected seasonal rainfall, making it the leading division in Maharashtra for monsoon progress so far.

Rainfall Increases Across Nagpur and Amravati Divisions

The Nagpur division also experienced a notable rise in rainfall activity. Average rainfall increased from 24.6 mm to 37.3 mm, helping the region reach 24.9 percent of its seasonal average. Meanwhile, the Amravati division registered a gain of 12.1 mm as average rainfall rose from 19.1 mm to 31.2 mm within four days. The rainfall has brought welcome relief to farmers cultivating cotton, soybean, and pigeon pea, improving expectations for a productive Kharif season.

Pune Division Receives Consistent Monsoon Showers

The Pune division continued to receive steady rainfall during the recent spell. Its average rainfall increased from 37.3 mm to 41.4 mm, allowing the division to achieve 26.1 percent of its seasonal rainfall target. The consistent showers are expected to support agricultural activities and improve soil moisture across the region.

Amravati and Yavatmal Experience Intense Downpours

Several areas in the Amravati district witnessed widespread heavy rainfall beginning Tuesday evening. Nine revenue circles, including those in the Nandgaon Khandeshwar tehsil, reported significant rainfall. The timely showers have improved conditions for agricultural operations and raised confidence among farmers preparing their fields for sowing.

Yavatmal district also recorded persistent rainfall from Tuesday onward. The district received an average of 23.3 mm of rainfall during the previous 24 hours, while eight revenue circles experienced heavy showers. The improved soil moisture has created favourable conditions for Kharif crop cultivation, offering renewed optimism for the agricultural season.
