Advocates – Karnataka Strengthens Supreme Court Legal Team With New Appointments
Advocates – The Karnataka government has expanded its legal team before the Supreme Court by appointing two experienced legal professionals, Kunal Vajani and Omar Hoda, as Additional Advocate Generals (AAGs). The appointments were announced through an official notification issued by the State’s Law, Justice and Human Rights Department and have come into force with immediate effect.

Government Issues Official Notification
According to the notification, the appointments have been made under the executive powers granted to the State government through Article 162 of the Constitution. The newly appointed Additional Advocate Generals will represent Karnataka before the Supreme Court until further orders are issued by the government.
The decision reflects the State’s efforts to reinforce its legal representation at the highest judicial forum, particularly at a time when several important constitutional and administrative matters are being heard by the apex court.
Extensive Experience in Diverse Areas of Law
Kunal Vajani brings significant legal experience to the role. Practising before the Supreme Court, various High Courts and tribunals across the country, he has been involved in a broad range of cases covering commercial disputes, constitutional matters, criminal law, taxation issues and arbitration proceedings.
Apart from courtroom practice, Vajani is also known for his work as an arbitrator and mediator. His experience in handling complex legal disputes is expected to contribute to Karnataka’s legal strategy in matters involving both public and private law.
Strong Background in Commercial and Regulatory Matters
Omar Hoda is widely recognised for his practice before the Supreme Court and his extensive involvement in commercial and regulatory litigation. Over the years, he has represented parties in a variety of high-value and legally significant disputes, building a reputation for handling intricate legal questions before constitutional courts.
His appointment is expected to add further depth to the State’s legal team, particularly in cases involving regulatory frameworks, commercial policies and governance-related issues.
Growing Need for Specialist Counsel
The appointments come at a time when state governments across India are increasingly engaging senior legal specialists to represent them in complex constitutional disputes, policy challenges and inter-governmental matters before the Supreme Court.
As litigation involving states becomes more specialised and legally demanding, governments are placing greater emphasis on building teams with expertise across multiple branches of law. Karnataka’s latest move aligns with this broader trend seen among several states seeking stronger representation before the apex court.
Strengthening Karnataka’s Presence Before the Apex Court
Legal observers believe the inclusion of Vajani and Hoda will enhance Karnataka’s ability to manage an expanding portfolio of cases before the Supreme Court. Their combined experience in litigation, dispute resolution and constitutional matters is expected to support the State in handling legally significant proceedings more effectively.
The appointments are also viewed as a step towards ensuring that Karnataka has access to specialised legal expertise in matters that may have long-term administrative, financial and constitutional implications. With an increasing number of cases requiring detailed legal scrutiny, the strengthened legal team is expected to play an important role in representing the State’s interests before the country’s highest court.
