Diplomacy – India Calls for Maritime Safety and Peace Amid Rising Middle East Tensions
Diplomacy – India has raised serious concerns at the United Nations Security Council over the growing instability in West Asia, warning that continued conflict is affecting regional security, international trade routes, and the safety of civilians, including Indian nationals working across the region.
Speaking during a UN Security Council discussion focused on peacebuilding and conflict resolution in the Middle East, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, emphasized the need for restraint and dialogue. He noted that the conflict in Iran and surrounding Gulf areas has intensified at a time when regional stability is already under strain, creating risks for both local populations and foreign workers.
Concerns Over Attacks on Commercial Shipping
A major focus of India’s statement was the security of commercial vessels operating in the region. Ambassador Parvathaneni said India strongly opposes attacks on merchant ships and vital maritime routes, stressing that thousands of Indian citizens serve in the global shipping industry.
According to the envoy, several Indians have either lost their lives or remain unaccounted for following attacks linked to the ongoing regional tensions. He underlined that freedom of navigation and the protection of commercial shipping are essential for maintaining global trade and economic stability.
Recent incidents involving vessels carrying Indian crew members have heightened New Delhi’s concerns. One such attack reportedly occurred near Oman, where crew members aboard a commercial tanker were affected. Another vessel carrying Indian nationals also came under threat during heightened military activity in regional waters.
Impact on Indian Citizens and Economy
India highlighted that nearly 10 million of its citizens live and work in Gulf countries, making developments in the region a matter of direct national concern. The government has repeatedly stated that the welfare and safety of these communities remain a priority.
Parvathaneni also pointed to the economic implications of prolonged instability. India relies heavily on the region for energy supplies and trade links, and disruptions to shipping lanes or commercial activity could have significant consequences for supply chains and broader economic interests.
He observed that the conflict has led to widespread destruction, loss of life, and interruptions to normal economic activity, creating challenges that extend beyond national borders.
Call for Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution
Reaffirming India’s longstanding position, the ambassador urged all parties to pursue diplomatic engagement instead of military escalation. He called for the protection of civilian infrastructure, respect for international law, and uninterrupted maritime commerce.
India expressed support for efforts aimed at achieving peaceful settlements through negotiations and mediation, arguing that sustainable peace can only be achieved through dialogue rather than confrontation.
Humanitarian Situation Remains a Priority
Beyond security concerns, India drew attention to the humanitarian impact of ongoing conflicts across West Asia. The country noted that civilian casualties, displacement, and disruptions to essential services continue to affect millions of people.
Regarding Gaza, India reiterated its support for a durable ceasefire, improved humanitarian access, and progress toward a negotiated two-state solution. The Indian representative described such a framework as the most viable path toward long-term peace and stability.
India also announced a financial contribution of USD 2.5 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The funding forms part of India’s annual assistance commitment to the agency.
Support for Lebanon and UN Peacekeepers
Addressing developments in Lebanon, India stressed the importance of respecting the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The statement also highlighted the role of Indian personnel serving within the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Parvathaneni called for stronger measures to ensure the safety of peacekeepers and emphasized that attacks against UN personnel are unacceptable. India additionally confirmed plans to provide medical assistance to Lebanon amid ongoing challenges.
Push for Reform at the United Nations
India used the Security Council platform to renew its call for reforms within the United Nations system. The ambassador argued that current global conflicts have exposed limitations in the existing structure of the Security Council.
He said the international body must adapt to changing geopolitical realities and become more representative of the modern world. India advocated expanding both permanent and non-permanent membership categories to improve the council’s effectiveness and credibility in addressing global crises.
