Governance – PM Modi Becomes India’s Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister
Governance – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached a significant milestone in Indian political history by becoming the country’s longest-serving democratically elected prime minister. On Wednesday, he completed 4,399 days in office, moving ahead of the tenure record previously held by India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Speaking after the achievement was acknowledged by leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Modi described the recognition as a collective accomplishment rather than an individual one. He said the credit belonged to all alliance partners, party workers, and supporters who contributed to the government’s journey over the years.
NDA Leaders Reaffirm Support
During a meeting held in New Delhi, NDA leaders adopted a resolution expressing confidence in Modi’s leadership and governance. The proposal was introduced by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and supported by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. Several senior leaders from alliance parties and the Union government also endorsed the resolution.
Addressing the gathering, Modi thanked alliance members for their support and stated that the resolution reflected the combined efforts of the NDA. He emphasized that achievements associated with the government were the result of teamwork and a shared commitment to national development.
Focus on Economic Performance
Highlighting India’s economic progress, the prime minister pointed to strong growth figures despite uncertainty in the global economy. According to him, the country recorded growth of 7.7 percent during the 2025-26 financial year and 7.8 percent in the quarter ending March 31.
Modi said India had managed to maintain economic momentum even as several major economies faced challenges. He noted that government policies were aimed at strengthening growth while creating opportunities for citizens across different sectors.
Governance Model Highlighted
The NDA resolution praised what it described as a governance approach centered on public welfare, accountability, and effective implementation of policies. Alliance leaders stated that the past 12 years had seen an increased focus on development initiatives, citizen participation, and measurable outcomes.
The resolution also highlighted the government’s emphasis on inclusive growth, saying that policy decisions were designed to benefit a broad section of society. Leaders described the administration as responsive to public needs and committed to long-term national progress.
Reforms and Investment Climate
Alliance leaders said India had strengthened its position as an attractive destination for investment and innovation. They pointed to major reforms, including the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and efforts to remove outdated laws that increased regulatory burdens.
According to the resolution, these measures contributed to improving both the ease of doing business and the ease of living. It stated that reforms had encouraged entrepreneurship and helped create a more supportive environment for economic activity.
Measures for the Middle Class
The prime minister also highlighted initiatives aimed at supporting middle-class families. He noted that annual income up to ₹12 lakh had been made tax-free under the current framework and referred to the introduction of a simplified, faceless tax administration system.
Modi said the government had worked to expand educational and professional opportunities for young people, particularly those from middle-income households. He added that these efforts were intended to help families benefit from India’s economic growth.
Remarks on National Priorities
During his address, Modi stressed that national interest should remain above political considerations. He said governments must be prepared to make difficult but necessary decisions when they serve the country’s long-term goals.
The prime minister also contrasted the NDA’s tenure with previous administrations, arguing that his government had promoted confidence and optimism since taking office in 2014. He referred to decisions such as the abrogation of Article 370, peace-related efforts in the Northeast, and security measures undertaken in response to terrorism as examples of significant policy actions carried out during his tenure.
