Politics – Gaurav Gogoi Targets BJP Over Governance and Democratic Practices

Politics – Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of undermining democratic values by encouraging political defections and weakening key institutions. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed 12 uninterrupted years in office, Gogoi said the ruling party had increasingly relied on strategies aimed at expanding power through political realignments.

Concerns Over Political Defections

Addressing questions from journalists, Gogoi claimed that the BJP had transformed political competition into a process centered on attracting leaders from rival parties rather than strengthening democratic engagement. According to him, this trend has been visible across the country and has also affected Assam’s political landscape.

He argued that such practices have had a negative impact on democratic traditions and have altered the way political parties operate in the state.

Allegations Regarding Media Independence

The Congress leader also raised concerns about media freedom, alleging that the BJP was attempting to exert influence over the flow of information. Referring to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s decision to continue overseeing the Information and Public Relations Department, Gogoi suggested that the move had sparked questions about the independence of the media.

He stated that growing concerns remain regarding how freely media organizations will be able to function if political influence continues to expand within the communication framework.

Questions Over Ministerial Appointments

Gogoi further alleged that individuals who had faced accusations related to corruption and syndicate-linked activities had been entrusted with important positions in the Assam government. He referred to allegations connected with the so-called cattle syndicate, the Gir cow controversy, and claims of irregularities linked to the Assam Legislative Assembly.

According to the APCC chief, such appointments have raised concerns among sections of the public regarding accountability and governance standards.

Criticism of Economic Conditions

Turning to national issues, Gogoi said many citizens continue to experience economic challenges despite political celebrations by the ruling party. He questioned the significance of marking political milestones when, according to him, several sections of society are still dealing with financial pressures and everyday difficulties.

The Congress leader maintained that public welfare and economic improvement should remain the primary focus of governance.

Rajya Sabha Election and Election Commission Remarks

Gogoi also commented on the rejection of the Congress candidate’s nomination during the Rajya Sabha election process in Madhya Pradesh. He alleged that the BJP was prepared to take every possible step to maintain its political position.

In addition, he expressed concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission, claiming that complaints raised by the BJP often receive prompt attention, while issues highlighted by the Congress are not always addressed with the same urgency. He argued that this perception has contributed to questions regarding fairness in the political process.

NEET Issue and ST Status Demand

The APCC president also criticized Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the controversy surrounding the NEET examination paper leak. Gogoi alleged that sufficient moral responsibility had not been accepted in connection with the issue.

He further questioned the Assam government’s approach toward granting Scheduled Tribe status to six communities in the state. According to him, authorities have yet to provide a clear timeline for implementing the long-pending demand.

Congress Focuses on Grassroots Expansion

Meanwhile, Gogoi said the Congress party has begun a series of organizational review meetings across Assam. The initiative is aimed at strengthening the party’s presence at the grassroots level and improving engagement with different communities and ethnic groups throughout the state.

Expressing confidence about the party’s future prospects, he said the Congress is working to align itself more closely with public expectations and believes these efforts will help it emerge stronger in the coming years.
