ElectionCommission – Congress Secures Meeting With Poll Panel Over Rajya Sabha Nomination Dispute

ElectionCommission – The Election Commission of India (ECI) has agreed to hold discussions with a Congress delegation on Wednesday afternoon following a dispute over the rejection of senior party leader Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination for a Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh. The decision came after a day of intense exchanges outside the Commission’s headquarters in New Delhi, where Congress leaders sought an urgent hearing on the matter.

Election Commission Schedules Discussion

In a communication addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, the Election Commission confirmed that representatives of the party would be received at 12 pm on Wednesday. The poll body also requested details of the delegation members and their vehicles through email to facilitate security and entry arrangements at its headquarters.

Congress Leaders Face Entry Restrictions

Earlier on Tuesday, a Congress delegation led by party general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal arrived at the Election Commission office seeking immediate engagement with officials. Senior leaders Jairam Ramesh, Bhupesh Baghel and Sachin Pilot were also part of the group.

According to party leaders, they were initially not permitted to enter the premises despite informing the Commission in advance about their visit. The situation led to a confrontation at the entrance, with Congress representatives insisting on meeting officials to raise concerns regarding the rejected nomination.

Protest Threat Outside ECI Headquarters

As tensions escalated, Venugopal warned that party leaders would remain outside the Commission’s office until they were granted an audience. Addressing reporters, he described the issue as one concerning democratic principles and emphasized that several senior political figures had gathered to seek clarification from the poll body.

Sachin Pilot also questioned the basis of the nomination rejection, stating that no FIRs or chargesheets existed against Natarajan. He alleged that a seat the party expected to secure had been put at risk due to the cancellation of her nomination papers and expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of immediate access to Election Commission officials.

Memorandum Submitted to Poll Officials

Following the protest, Election Commission authorities permitted Venugopal and Jairam Ramesh to submit a memorandum outlining the party’s objections. In the document, Congress maintained that Natarajan had accurately disclosed all criminal cases known to her while filing her nomination papers and election affidavit.

The party argued that there was no justification for questioning the information provided and maintained that the disclosures were made honestly and in accordance with election requirements.

Dispute Over Telangana Case

Congress further contended that objections raised against Natarajan’s nomination were based on allegations relating to a criminal case in Telangana that had not been properly examined. According to the memorandum, the matter originated from a private complaint filed before the IV Additional Chief Judge at Nampally.

The party noted that the court had not yet taken cognisance of the complaint, describing the objection as lacking substantive grounds. Congress asserted that the absence of judicial action in the matter demonstrated the weakness of the allegations used against its candidate.

Party Questions Rejection Procedure

Another key concern raised by Congress was the process followed before the nomination was rejected. The memorandum claimed that Natarajan was not given an opportunity to explain her position or respond to the objections raised against her candidature.

The party stated that she had completed the nomination process based on the information available to her and had not concealed any criminal background. Congress alleged that the Returning Officer acted on a unilateral objection without offering a hearing to the candidate before taking the final decision.

Demand for Immediate Review

Congress has urged the Election Commission to provide a personal hearing to Natarajan and senior party representatives at the earliest opportunity. The party has also requested that the order rejecting her nomination be withdrawn while the matter is reviewed and a final determination is made.

The scheduled meeting is expected to provide both sides an opportunity to present their positions and examine the circumstances surrounding the disputed Rajya Sabha nomination.
