EarthquakeAlert – Powerful Philippines Quake Triggers Tsunami Precautions Across Asia
EarthquakeAlert – A powerful offshore earthquake near the southern Philippines prompted tsunami advisories and precautionary evacuations across parts of Asia on Monday, with authorities in Japan and Indonesia closely monitoring sea conditions. Although small tsunami waves were recorded in several locations, officials later confirmed that conditions had stabilized and major warnings were withdrawn.

Tsunami Waves Reach Parts of Japan
Japan’s Meteorological Agency reported that tsunami waves ranging from a few centimeters to around 20 centimeters were detected along sections of the country’s Pacific coastline after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred in waters off the southern Philippines.
As a precaution, tsunami advisories were issued for a wide stretch of coastal regions, extending from Ibaraki Prefecture in eastern Japan down to Okinawa in the south. Officials urged residents in vulnerable coastal zones to remain alert while authorities monitored wave activity.
Highest Wave Measurements Recorded in Several Areas
Among the locations affected, Chichijima Island in the Ogasawara chain south of Tokyo recorded waves of approximately 20 centimeters. Similar readings were observed in Kushimoto, located in Wakayama Prefecture, and at Miyazaki Port in southern Japan.
Other coastal monitoring stations in Kagoshima, Mie, and Miyazaki prefectures reported wave heights near 10 centimeters. Smaller fluctuations in sea levels were also noted in Okinawa and nearby coastal communities.
By late afternoon, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced that all tsunami advisories had been lifted after assessments indicated no continuing threat.
Large-Scale Evacuation Advisories Issued
According to reports citing Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency, more than 195,000 residents across 10 prefectures were advised to move to safer locations at one stage during the emergency response.
The evacuation recommendations affected several regions, including Chiba, Kochi, and Okinawa, reflecting the broad geographic area covered by the tsunami advisories. Authorities emphasized precautionary measures while monitoring incoming wave data.
Indonesia Withdraws Tsunami Warning
Indonesia also responded swiftly following the earthquake. The country’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) initially issued tsunami warnings for northern coastal areas and instructed residents in potentially affected regions to take safety measures.
However, after several hours of observation, the agency announced that the warning had been canceled. Officials said monitoring data showed sea levels had returned to normal conditions, reducing concerns about further tsunami impacts.
Minor Sea-Level Changes Detected
BMKG confirmed that small tsunami waves were recorded at a number of coastal observation points in northern Indonesia earlier in the day. Despite the readings, authorities reported no significant coastal damage linked to the event.
Local media outlets indicated that the earthquake caused anxiety among residents in several northeastern Indonesian coastal communities. Tremors were felt across numerous towns and villages, leading many people to leave buildings and move to safer areas.
No Immediate Reports of Casualties
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology stated that the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck offshore waters in the southern Philippines on Monday morning. The strong quake prompted neighboring countries to activate emergency monitoring systems and issue public safety advisories.
While the earthquake was felt across parts of the region, authorities in affected countries reported no immediate information regarding deaths or serious injuries. Monitoring efforts continued throughout the day as agencies tracked sea conditions and assessed potential aftereffects.
