LungCancerTreatment – Patients diagnosed with advanced-stage lung cancer in Andhra Pradesh now have access to a significant treatment opportunity as King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam has introduced a clinical trial offering immunotherapy at no cost. The programme marks a major milestone for government-run healthcare institutions in the state, bringing an expensive and advanced cancer treatment option within reach of eligible patients.
Trial Aims to Expand Access to Modern Cancer Care
The clinical study is being conducted by the Department of Medical Oncology at KGH and is designed for patients between 18 and 65 years of age who have been diagnosed with Stage-IV lung cancer. Participants selected for the trial will receive a combination of immunotherapy and chemotherapy over a treatment period extending up to one year.
Hospital authorities stated that the initiative seeks to improve treatment accessibility for patients who would otherwise face significant financial barriers when pursuing advanced cancer therapies.
High-Cost Treatment Offered Free Under Study
Immunotherapy has become an increasingly important option in the treatment of certain advanced cancers, but its cost often places it beyond the reach of many families. According to hospital officials, the medication being used in the trial typically costs around ₹4 lakh for a single treatment cycle in private healthcare facilities.
Under the clinical trial, eligible patients will receive the drug free of charge once every three weeks. The treatment plan includes a total of 17 cycles spread across a year. KGH currently remains the only government cancer centre in Andhra Pradesh conducting this specific clinical study.
The trial will be led by Dr K. Shilpa, Head of the Department of Medical Oncology, who is serving as the Principal Investigator for the programme.
Support for Economically Weaker Patients
KGH Superintendent Dr I. Vani described the initiative as a major relief for patients who cannot afford costly cancer treatments available in private hospitals. She encouraged eligible individuals to visit the hospital for medical assessment and enrolment in the study.
According to Dr Vani, lung cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths across the world. While immunotherapy has shown promising results for selected patients with advanced disease, the high expense involved has often restricted its availability, particularly within public healthcare systems.
Research and Patient Care to Benefit Together
Hospital officials believe the programme will not only provide access to modern treatment options but also contribute valuable data to ongoing cancer research. By participating in the study, patients may benefit from therapies that are otherwise difficult to obtain, while researchers gain insights that could help improve future treatment strategies.
