Admissions – IIT Roorkee Extends Opportunity for JEE Advanced Qualifiers
Admissions – Students aspiring to secure seats in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have received temporary relief after the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee announced a special provision for candidates who currently fall short of the prescribed Class 12 marks requirement. The decision allows eligible JEE Advanced qualifiers to continue participating in the admission process while awaiting the outcome of their mark verification or re-evaluation requests.

Revised Submission Window Offered
Under the latest notification, candidates who have not yet achieved the minimum qualifying percentage in their Class 12 or equivalent examination can still fill their preferred institute and course choices during the counselling process. Seat allocation will be carried out according to their JEE Advanced rank.
However, such students must submit an updated marksheet meeting the required eligibility conditions no later than July 15, 2026. Once the revised academic record is received and verified, admission will be confirmed against the seat allotted after the completion of the fourth round of counselling.
Decision Follows Student Concerns
The move comes after several days of appeals from students and parents across the country. Many candidates argued that the existing eligibility requirement should be reconsidered due to ongoing concerns regarding board examination results and the large number of applications for mark re-evaluation.
Following the declaration of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) results on May 13, numerous students expressed dissatisfaction with their scores. A significant number of candidates subsequently applied for verification and rechecking, hoping for revised marks that could affect their eligibility for higher education admissions.
IIT Roorkee Maintains Eligibility Standards
Despite demands on social media platforms seeking a one-time exemption from the qualifying marks rule, IIT Roorkee clarified that a complete relaxation of the eligibility criterion was not feasible. The institute noted that JEE Advanced candidates come from dozens of education boards across the country, making it difficult to alter admission requirements for students from any single board.
The institute reiterated that the eligibility benchmarks remain unchanged. Candidates from the General, OBC-NCL and EWS categories are required to secure at least 75 percent marks in Class 12 examinations, while students belonging to SC, ST and PwD categories must obtain a minimum of 65 percent.
Qualified Candidates Continue Admission Process
According to IIT Roorkee, candidates whose current scores are below the required threshold will not be excluded from counselling at this stage. They may proceed with choice filling and seat allocation based on their examination performance. The final admission process, however, will depend on the submission of revised results that satisfy the prescribed criteria within the specified deadline.
The announcement is particularly significant because thousands of students are awaiting the outcome of reassessment requests. Authorities expect that some candidates may become eligible for admission if their revised marks improve after the evaluation process is completed.
Large Number of Re-Evaluation Requests Filed
Data released in connection with the ongoing review process indicates that students have submitted more than 4.04 lakh applications seeking access to over 11.31 lakh answer sheets across various subjects. The re-evaluation and verification process remains underway.
Earlier this month, IIT Roorkee also published the list of 56,880 candidates who successfully qualified in JEE Advanced and became eligible to participate in the IIT admission process. The latest decision is expected to provide additional flexibility to those awaiting revised board examination results while ensuring that the established academic standards for admission remain in place.
