Smart Border Initiative Nearing Pilot Phase

While addressing Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at the Lankamura Border Outpost in Tripura’s West Tripura district along the India-Bangladesh border, Shah stated that the vision of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047 cannot be achieved without a strong and secure national framework.

He emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of creating a developed India requires not only economic and social progress but also a robust security environment. According to Shah, ensuring national safety remains a fundamental requirement for achieving long-term development objectives.

Expanding Security Challenges Along Borders

The Home Minister highlighted that modern security concerns extend beyond conventional military threats. He pointed out that border regions are increasingly vulnerable to crimes such as narcotics trafficking, human smuggling, illegal cattle transportation, counterfeit currency circulation, and growing drug addiction among youth.

He noted that such activities pose serious risks to both national security and economic stability, making stronger border management systems essential.

Tribute to BSF Personnel

Praising the contribution of BSF personnel stationed along the borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, Shah acknowledged their commitment and sacrifice. He said citizens across the country deeply value the dedication shown by security personnel who protect the nation under difficult and often challenging circumstances.

According to him, the efforts of BSF jawans in maintaining vigilance and safeguarding sensitive border areas have earned widespread public respect and trust.

Technology to Play a Central Role

Speaking about the Smart Border Fencing programme, Shah revealed that the project is currently in its final stages of planning. A pilot version is expected to be introduced next year at selected locations across various states where both the BSF and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) are deployed.

The pilot phase will help authorities assess operational effectiveness and identify any shortcomings before the project is expanded on a larger scale. After reviewing the results, the government intends to implement the full Smart Border Project with comprehensive coverage and integrated monitoring capabilities.

Focus on Infiltration and Cross-Border Crime

The Home Minister observed that India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh present distinct security concerns. These include illegal infiltration, drug trafficking networks, human trafficking operations, and the use of drones for transporting weapons and narcotics across the border.

He stressed that the government is working to close existing security gaps and establish a more coordinated system capable of addressing evolving threats.

Shah also asserted that the Centre remains determined to prevent demographic changes caused by illegal infiltration in states such as West Bengal, Tripura, and Bihar. He said border management mechanisms are being strengthened to tackle these challenges more effectively.

Welfare Measures for Security Personnel

Addressing the welfare of border guards, Shah said the government understands the difficulties faced by BSF personnel and their families. He added that several initiatives have already been introduced to improve their working conditions and overall well-being.

The government, he said, remains committed to addressing concerns related to service conditions and family welfare for those serving in border security roles.

Tribute to Madhav Sadashivrao Golwalkar

At the beginning of his speech, Shah paid homage to Madhav Sadashivrao Golwalkar, popularly known as Shri Guruji, on his death anniversary. He described Golwalkar as a prominent figure who devoted his life to nation-building, character development, and the preservation of India’s cultural heritage.

The Home Minister said Golwalkar’s commitment to public service, self-discipline, and national development inspired generations of volunteers across the country. He further noted that his ideas related to self-reliance and national progress continue to influence young people and encourage them to contribute to the nation’s growth.

The event was attended by several senior officials, including Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, Border Management Secretary Rajendra Kumar, BSF Director General Praveen Kumar, and BSF Tripura Frontier Inspector General Alok Chakraborty
