Elections – BJP Strengthens Urban Footprint in Punjab Civic Poll Results

Elections –  The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has recorded a notable improvement in its performance in the 2026 Punjab municipal elections, with results announced on Friday showing the party making gains across several urban local bodies. Although the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) remained the dominant political force in the overall contest, the BJP succeeded in expanding its presence in multiple municipal corporations, councils, and nagar panchayats across the state.

Improved Results Across Local Bodies

Based on the results declared so far, the BJP has secured 162 wards spread across eight municipal corporations, 76 municipal councils, and 21 nagar panchayats. The figures represent a significant rise compared with the party’s performance in the previous civic elections held in 2021.

Of the total seats won, 63 wards came from municipal corporations, while 99 wards were secured in municipal councils. The outcome highlights the party’s growing influence in several urban regions where it has traditionally sought to strengthen its organisational network.

Strong Performance in Key Municipal Corporations

Among the municipal corporations, Abohar emerged as the BJP’s strongest centre of support. The party won 28 wards there, making it the leading political group in the civic body. Another strong showing came in Pathankot, where the BJP secured victory in 18 wards.

The party also gained representation in several other municipal corporations. It won seven wards in Barnala and three wards each in Mohali, Moga, and Kapurthala. In Bathinda, the BJP registered a ward victory, enabling it to secure representation in the corporation.

Political observers note that these results point to the party’s expanding reach in urban areas, particularly in border districts and towns where it has traditionally enjoyed support among sections of traders and urban residents.

Gains Recorded in Municipal Councils

The BJP also made progress in a number of municipal councils throughout Punjab. Naya Gaon Municipal Council delivered 16 wards to the party, while Fazilka contributed 11. Rajpura and Mukerian also witnessed strong performances, with the BJP winning eight and seven wards respectively.

Further gains were recorded in Mansa, where the party secured six wards, and in Ferozepur, where it won five. The BJP added four wards each in Zirakpur, Jagraon, Sujanpur, and Roopnagar.

Additional victories came from Nabha, Nangal, and Gobindgarh, where the party secured three wards each. Derabassi, Samana, and Patran contributed two wards each to the BJP tally. The party also managed single-seat wins in several towns, including Dhariwal, Hariana, Bhadaur, Samrala, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Malerkotla, Sunam, Banga, Kurali, Lalru, Kartarpur, Nakodar, Talwandi Bhai, Noormahal, and Bassi Pathana.

Comparison With the 2021 Elections

The latest results stand in sharp contrast to the party’s position during the 2021 municipal elections. At that time, the BJP was facing political challenges amid the farmers’ protest movement and had limited success in urban contests.

In the 2021 civic polls, the party won only 20 seats across eight municipal corporations. It failed to secure representation in some corporations, including Abohar, Bathinda, and Kapurthala. Meanwhile, the Congress had dominated the urban electoral landscape by winning a large majority of corporation wards statewide.

Significance for Punjab Politics

The 2026 civic election outcome suggests that the BJP has regained ground in several urban pockets of Punjab. The improvement comes after years of organisational efforts and independent electoral contests following its separation from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

While AAP continues to maintain a strong position in many local bodies, the BJP’s increased ward tally indicates a broader urban recovery. The results are particularly noteworthy because the party contested most seats on its own rather than depending on regional alliance partners.

With vote counting still underway in some civic bodies, the BJP’s final tally could rise further, potentially reinforcing its position as an increasingly influential player in Punjab’s urban political landscape.
