Parking Crisis – Delhi Plans Large-Scale Surface Parking Expansion Across City

Parking Crisis –  Delhi is preparing for a significant expansion of parking facilities as authorities move to address increasing traffic congestion and the shortage of organised parking spaces across the capital.

Parking crisis delhi expansion

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has announced plans to identify more than 3,000 vacant land parcels over the coming year for the development of new surface parking areas. The initiative was discussed during a high-level meeting chaired by Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, marking the first joint interaction with all seven Lok Sabha Members of Parliament representing Delhi.

Focus on Traffic and Parking Challenges

The meeting primarily centred on issues linked to urban congestion, illegal parking, encroachments, and the use of vacant government land. Officials also reviewed concerns related to the maintenance and accessibility of public parks managed by the DDA.

According to officials present at the meeting, 232 vacant plots have already been identified and prepared for the tendering process to establish surface parking facilities. Authorities estimate that these locations together could provide parking space for nearly one lakh vehicles, offering relief to several overcrowded neighbourhoods where roadside parking has become a major concern.

Distribution of Proposed Parking Sites

Officials shared zone-wise details of the proposed parking locations. The highest number of identified plots falls within the Dwarka Zone, where 98 sites have been shortlisted. The North Zone accounts for 53 plots, while the Rohini Zone has 30 identified locations. In East Delhi, 28 sites have been selected, and 23 plots are located in the South Zone.

Civic authorities believe that developing these vacant parcels into organised parking areas could improve traffic flow on major roads and reduce congestion caused by vehicles parked along streets and market areas.

Authorities Stress Action Against Encroachments

During the discussions, unauthorised occupation of public land and encroachments emerged as another major issue raised by the MPs. Representatives reportedly described encroachment as one of the most pressing civic problems affecting the city’s infrastructure and public movement.

The MPs assured administrative authorities that they would support efforts aimed at removing illegal occupation from government land and improving urban management in affected areas.

Lieutenant-Governor Sandhu highlighted that proper utilisation of vacant DDA land could help create long-term solutions for Delhi’s transportation and parking-related difficulties. Officials added that the initiative is expected to reduce dependence on roadside parking, which often disrupts traffic movement and pedestrian access.

DDA Parks to Remain Open During Morning Hours

Apart from parking and traffic concerns, public access to DDA parks was also discussed during the meeting. The Lieutenant-Governor directed that all DDA parks should remain open daily between 6 am and 10 am.

Authorities also stated that parks where entry fees are usually charged would allow visitors free access during these morning hours. The move is intended to encourage greater public use of green spaces and improve accessibility for residents seeking recreational and fitness activities.

The discussions reflect a broader effort by city authorities to address long-standing urban challenges linked to congestion, infrastructure management, and public convenience as Delhi continues to witness rising population pressure and increasing vehicle numbers.
